Craft Beer In The Uk: A London Revolution
"You can see the cupolas, domes and reliefs of London's temple of butchery through
the front windows of this refurbed Victorian site, which no longer uses its antique 'Ye Olde' prefix and has turned its focus to serving very good beer." - Timeout
Dating back to 1854, The Old Red Cow, now serving one of the largest selections of
craft beer in london is allegedly one of the oldest pubs in the area located in the historic landscape of the Smithfield meat market near Barbican. It has been owned, amongst others, by Dick O'Shea, who is said to have haunted it for the first year after his death in 1981.
Now fully rejuvenated as a contemporary pub, The Old Red Cow was born out of a love for 'nice pubs'. We wanted to create environments that were conducive to fun, relaxation and conversation. We also wanted to celebrate the effort and commitment of micro-breweries both in Britain and abroad in producing a variety of beer that you won't find in any of the other pubs in Barbican, in short 'a delicatessen of beer' - hence the contemporary 'local beer house' was invented.
London has a long history of brewing, with Courage, Fullers and Young's all brewed in the capital since the middle of the 18th Century. Indeed Barbican was the site of the Whitbread & Co Ltd when it established its breweries it what is now referred to as CityPoint.
The Craft Beer revolution has encapsulated a return to brewing values where the local brew reflected different regions of Britain. This 'brewing tradition' has in some respects over the past thirty years been lost and our pubs have taken on an all too familiar landscape that turned the pub into an ordinary place.
Now, once again, we have the opportunity to celebrate our national drink and the variety and quality of brews available is stunning. We are proud at The Old Red Cow to be part of this revolution and our customers are telling us 'they are too'.
