Craft as a word, has generated various meanings and implications over the centuries

. In the past, craft used to be associated with trade or profession of highly skilled individuals, which generally involved the making of things. This term is still used until modern time when it is also used to describe a small-scale enterprise or the art of making creative things that may or may not be produced on a large scale. Anyone involved in craft works used to be viewed as highly skilled individuals, with certain level of mastery. This therefore gave rise to apprenticeship, where such masters take on learners or apprentice who get trained in the specialised craftwork. Once this apprentice is qualified, as assessed by the master, the apprentice can then go on to be their own boss and master in their own right over apprentice.

Modern times have however modified the concept of craft works by classing it into two categories. One involved the creating of artistic/decorative items by hand with the help of manually operated equipments or simple electronic devises. The second class involved creation of similar artistic/decorative items but this time on a mass-production scale using more sophisticated machinery. The craftwork is also given the term Handicraft because of its manual handling nature in creating what is often referred to as products of Artisanship. The reason why the term Craft is used to describe certain works now is because craftworks can be purely decorative without any intended practical use for them.

This gives rise to the production of Craft Kits. Craft Kits has given everyone and anyone the opportunity to create artistic works with or without any necessary artistic skills. Craft Kits may include bits, accessories, manual tools, specialised materials and/or how to instructions. The aim of craft kits is to encourage people to try their hands on doing something creative. Even if the item being made is available in mass production, people still enjoy making it unique by creating it themselves. Examples of such craft kits are Making personalised greeting cards; Pottery and Jewellery Making using polymer clay products and small metal manipulation tools; Painting by Numbers, a step-by-step guide to creating simple paintings to recreating master pieces; Frame Making for up and coming wood workers; Sewing Kits for budding seamstress and fashion designers along with professionals who just want some simple kits to create quick samples.

Craft Kits has helped many people discovered hidden talents that they never thought existed. This is because with craft kits there are beginners level and more advanced level, giving people the opportunity to try out virtually any form of craft before deciding whether to advance on it or dropping it for something else. Craft Kits has grown in popularity among people of all ages groups. Parents buy it to help their children develop creative and innovative skills; educationists buy it because it help them achieve a lot more due to easy set-up, instructions and executions; Older people buy it because it is engaging, challenging and gives them the opportunity to create something at leisurely.

Craft Kits are available in not only the obvious places, craft shops, but also art shops and even many supermarkets are now stockists of some craft kits. Prices vary, depending on the type of craft projects you have in mind. However craft kits are so easily accessible that you can get one for the price of a childs meal. Many of the craft kits, if not all of them, are readily available online at even more competitive prices. This has further increased the popularity of handmade gift items which people not only make for themselves or relatives but to sell in high street outlets and online.
