There are many baits that you can use to catch crappie. My favorite has always been using live minnows. My favorite type of minnow to use is the Red Shiner. It is a very active minnow and is extremely durable. I remember catching multiple crappie while using the same minnow! Its amazing how well they work.
You can always try to catch crappie using artificial bait as well. If you have studied the water and understand where the crappie school, you can receive very good results using small jigs. I have always had the best luck using yellow jigs, but I'm sure they all will work well.
When you decide to go crappie fishing and you find yourself at the right place, at the right time, you will have a fun filled day. Most lakes around the Midwest have a yield limit of 50 fish per day, per angler. You can probably guess how many fish you can potentially guess by the high yield limit.
Crappie is also one of the best tasting fish you will ever eat. I have had it baked before and also fried. Top it with a little tarter sauce of course!
