Essential Facts of Northern Pike Fishing

There are several spots in Ontario lakes in the north where you can find lots of northern pikes

. You are bound to find the medium sized and smaller pikes, mostly, in places where the weeds are thick. Northern pikes usually feed on each other or frogs, minnows and bugs.

The body of the northern pike is small, has sharp teeth and a head that is huge. They usually grow very fast in the southern waters but in the northern waters they grow at a slower rate and are about 15 inches as they approach their first year of life. During spring, the pike move to the shallow waters and stay there till the waters warm up during the day, which is the time they feed. Therefore, the best time to go fishing for the Northern pike is during the day.

The best fishing season is during fall, winter and spring when the pikes are in plenty. The fish can still be caught during the summer season. The pike can attack anything that resembles a meal and use of heavy or medium bait can lure the aggressive pike fish. During the summer season, the pike stay in the water that is cooler and about six feet or twelve feet deep. To fish for these pikes you need to set the bait close to where the river joins the lake or depressed bottoms of the lakes where the large pikes tend to hide as the waters are cooler. Artificial lures are also great for the summer fishing of pikes. To entice the fish you need to use very fast trolling techniques, the rod needs to be stiff, the line should be about 30 pounds of the test line and the wind reel should be leveled.

During fall and spring the lake temperatures are much cooler. The fish will likely be found in weeded areas. Use of bait that is medium in weight is preferred in casting and trolling. The lures that you use need to be lively and red, and yellow spoons that wobble. Also the silver spoons will be effective especially when there is a cloud overcast kind of weather.

During the winter it is not uncommon to find fishing activity going on in the ice waters especially in states like Wisconsin, Dakota and Minnesota. This fishing is done with live baits though dead ones can still be used. Fishing with bobbers is very effective as the pike will not be able to resist the large minnow dangling from the bobber. This is best done in the weeds where they like to hide. They may not necessarily attack the bait immediately and just play around with it. Thus one needs to be patient and when they attack, it is usually violent and ones bobber could be drawn into the water.

Whatever the season or the method chosen to lure the pikes, it is always important to have a variation in speed and attract the pike by jerking the bait being used severally.
