Creating Walls with Eye Appeal

The average walls are plain and white

The average walls are plain and white. They lack character and pizzazz. Although some older ones have plenty of both of these items they are also host to dings and scratches, holes in the sheetrock and drywall, or chipping paint. So when it comes time to revamp, fix up or simply add to your walls there are numerous things you should take into consideration. Think of a project like this in sections; repair, replace, remove and add-on. These are great ways to stay organized.

Start with repairing the walls. This includes using construction mud to fill nail holes from long gone picture frames, wiping down walls with a damp cloth to remove dust or other loose debris and replacing damaged sections of drywall. These are all relatively simple fixes. You can purchase a small pint size tub of construction mud to fill in holes. This also works for dents in the drywall. Using a putty knife, apply the right amount of construction mud to the hole or dent. Try to keep this even and create a flat surface.

Simply let dry, sand, wipe off the excess dust and repaint if needed.

When replacing drywall the general rule is that anything smaller than 4" to 6" is able to be repaired using a drywall bandage. In order to replace the damaged section, cut a square or rectangle shape around the area to be replaced. Then cut a piece of drywall to fit the hole but approximately 2" larger than the damaged area. You can use a keyhole saw to perform this action. Lay the drywall down. Make sure the shiny side is on the table or floor. Using a utility knife, score a 1" perimeter around the replacement piece. This means cutting through the top layers down to the last layer of paper but not cutting all the way through.

Now scrape away the outer layer of that 1" perimeter being extra careful not to tear the paper on the bottom. A putty knife works best for this. Place this piece into the hole that had been damaged. The thick piece of drywall should fit right into the hole, leaving the paper, approximately 1", to layer over the existing drywall. Before placing it in the hole be sure to put a thin layer of repair compound to create a sort of glue for the outer inch to adhere to. Place the patch into the hole and use the same compound to place around the outer edges of the patch. You will need to sand this, wipe clean and repaint.

When it comes to adding to your walls, this is the fun part. This could mean crown molding, a new color of paint, even some chair rail around the mid level of the walls. This is the where imagination and your tastes get to show. Decorative trim work can be through the molding and the baseboards. It's time to put a splash of color or two or even some stripes or a unique design on the walls and let them tell a story about you.
