Creating a rustic French country-style bathroom

, as a comfortable home is a relaxing home and often that comes from creating the right look to suit the building. A popular style which has taken off both across Europe and in the States is the French country style of interior design; rustic, back to basics and with an emphasis on high-quality individual pieces rather than elaborate designs and patterns. Considered by many to be the most important room in the house, the bathroom is a great choice for incorporating a French country style.

The classic French bathroom is, above all else, about space, beauty and light; all which combine to create relaxation. Uncluttered and without the constraints of practical efficiency, a French country bathroom should be centred around natural materials only; much like the rest of the home. Forget the wet-room style tiled walls and chrome taps, this bathroom should be naturalistic and welcoming.

To create your own French country style bathroom, first consider the flooring. This is perhaps the single largest decision to make, as the floor will largely dictate the feel of the room, and can usually be quite an expensive mistake if you get it wrong. Look at only natural floor coverings, like wood or stone, slate or perhaps terra-cotta tiles. Obviously a bathroom floor will get wet and water-damage could be a concern, but instead don't worry about it and, should any tiles break or wood show signs of minor water-damage, just consider it part of the rustic charm. Generally speaking, if the exterior of the house is secure against the elements, then the interior should be just fine too.

Next you need to think about what colour you want to add to the bathroom. Most French country bathrooms are white or varying shades of white and cream, as these keep the room feeling airy and spacious. Light colours like these are complimented very well with equally light fabrics like linens and muslin. If you do decide to add any splashes of colour, always stay within the pastel range and don't be tempted to go for anything at all stark or brash. To add a contrast, instead perhaps choose a darker tone of wood for the surfaces, or whitewash shelving to bring more colour out of the floorboards.

For storage, again think natural'. No huge, bold cupboards but instead maybe a traditional dresser, or a shelf full of apothecary jars. For a year-round natural scent, try adding lavender flowers to the room and accessorise the room with vintage wooden towel racks, a framed mirror and anything else which works with the room's now distressed wood atmosphere.

Lighting and French bathroom furniture are important too, but take your time to find the right pieces to really make the most of the room. There are many specialist places online, or you can even try and create your own.
