Crib Or Bassinet - Why Not Both?

Whether to buy a crib only, bassinet only, both, or maybe a baby hammock is and will always be a personal choice. No matter what you decide, there will be someone who thinks your decision is wrong, and theirs' is better. Don't let it worry you, as the only important thing is what is best of you and baby.

Some people like having their newborn baby close to them at all times; but understand the importance of baby sleeping in a bed alone. The bassinet is fairly portable and can be rolled from room to room making it convenient for keeping baby close at hand. Others believe that the crib is sufficient for babies from birth; and that bassinets are not usable for very long and therefore cost prohibitive. Others think the baby hammock is the best invention ever and the best place for baby to sleep.

There are advantages and disadvantages to all three choices and only you can make the decision for your baby. Cribs are designed as permanent beds for the infant and kept in the nursery. They are larger than a bassinet and can carry baby until 2 years old or older; and many can be converted to a toddler bed, and later to a regular bed. Cribs are more stable and secure than a bassinet, but are immobile.

While many new parents want baby to sleep in their room, it is not always feasible for the crib to be there; nor is it always a good idea to have baby in your room. Both parents are more easily awakened if baby sleeps in their bedroom. Bassinets are better options for this, as once baby grows out he or she is likely to be moved to the nursery and the baby will be out of the parents' room sooner.
