Cristiano Ronaldo - Crisis In Portugal

Carlos Queiroz has endured a difficult reign during his short time as Portugal boss

and now with his job on the line over the two upcoming playoff games against Bosnia he has been delivered a fresh blow with Cristiano Ronaldo's fitness in doubt. The former Manchester United schemer has suffered a damaged ankle and the injury may only be slight but because of the nature of the sport and special talent he is it will take more time to make a full recovery.

Portugal have suffered a tough qualifying stage for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and perhaps the key to them getting is their star man, the current world footballer of the year, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star has enjoyed a successful career already and has had a quick rise to fame such is his ability.

His early career saw him winning a title with his local team on the Portuguese island of his birth way out in the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira. There he impressed and due to the clubs debts, and as he was the most saleable asset, he was sold on to Sporting Lisbon. The team was playing in the Champions League where Ronaldo was able to showcase his talents at the highest level of club football and after two seasons saw him move to Manchester United for over 10 million.

After 5 successful seasons where he picked up every possible domestic medal and a Champions League winners medal to boot he was sold to Real Madrid for a current world record fee of 80 million. Despite all this club success Ronaldo is yet to taste the glory of an international cup and with the way Portugal seem to falter when it comes to the latter stages of tournaments it is a doubt whether Ronaldo will ever experience it. However the player is still very young and will have plenty of time to help his country to their first major international honour.

So the boy form Funchal has come a long way indeed, and if it wasn't for his talents he may have never left the paradise of his birth. The island of Madeira lies closer to the coast of Morocco than Portugal, and as previously mentioned is some way out into the Atlantic Ocean. It has picturesque cliffs and beautiful green areas covering the land accentuating the natural healthy origins of the earth and how it once was. With such beauty it is understandable that 20% of the islands economy comes from tourism, and an extra 9% coming in the way of hotels and restaurants.

There is no denying that Ronaldo's superstardom will have raised interest in some travellers bringing them to this gem of great tropical lure, and for those who do visit they will find themselves wondering whether it was worth him leaving despite his success. Others may travel in hope that a little bit of his magic is still in the air hoping to capture some of his flair to take home with them.
