Social marketing sites allow you to connect with your audience and build a following. In order to do it right though, there are some steps you will need to take. Here's what you need to do to get started.

First, you will want to choose the sites where you will market. Google+, Facebook, Pinterest, and Linkedin are crucial. Although Pinterest is as much about pinning cool photos as anything else, it's still a social presence where you may use a wide variety of content to promote your business. Make it part of your marketing arsenal if you want to succeed in your online marketing efforts.

Next, create a profile for each one of these sites. Profile set up should be self explanatory, but here are a few tips to help you get the most from your profiles.


Make your profile as complete as possible. Show your expertise. Upload photos on Facebook and Pinterest that really represent your business. For Facebook, Linkedin and Google+, create a page for each of your websites or for your business. Include links to your websites. Make sure you write a good description about your business, and include your keywords in the page title and description.

Some of this information will be found in the search engines, and some of it won't. Each site has an internal search engine where visitors will search. Having the right keywords and an optimized profile will make it easier for you to be found.

Once you've completed your profile, the next step is to find friends or people to follow. Do a search at each of the sites to find others in your industry and then connect with them. Sometimes these sites have a limit on the number of people you may friend or follow, so this will be a task you need to do on a daily basis until you have built up a credible base.


Next, look for groups. Only Facebook and Linkedin will offer these, but you can find groups related to what you do so you may connect with those who are interested in what you offer. Join groups that also have your audience.

Share great content. Update your status regularly. Try using different times of day to send out your content to see which content gets the best response. You want to mix it up. If you constantly post information about your industry and nothing else, no one will listen to you. The exception here is Linkedin because it's the number one business network, and you should only offer content related to your business.

Social marketing takes time and patience. You will not get traffic and sales from it overnight. If you want to be where your customers are, then focus on these four sites. Depending on your industry, don't forget to add those sites specifically related to your industry. It will increase the amount of traffic and sales you receive.
