Crowns And Bridges Easily Restore Your Smile To Perfection

Thanks to advances in modern dentistry techniques

, even severely damaged smiles can be restored. Some of the most common methods for restoration are through the use of dental crowns and bridges. Chipped, broken, discolored or missing teeth can all be restored with the use of dental crowns and bridges.

Dental Crowns

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to restore its function, size, strength and appearance. When a crown is installed, it fully encases the visible portion of your tooth that is above the gum. Dental crowns can be used to protect a weak tooth, restore a broken one, support a dental bridge or cover a misshapen or discolored tooth. Crowns can be made of porcelain, ceramic or metal. Usually the teeth in the front of your mouth are restored using porcelain to mimic the natural appearance of your teeth.

Once you and your dentist have decided that a crown is the best option for you, he will begin the process by anesthetizing your tooth and filing it down. This will make room for the crown to comfortably fit in your mouth. After this, he or she will take an accurate impression of your tooth. This impression is then sent to a dental lab where a permanent crown will be fashioned in about two to three weeks. In between appointments, your dentist will give you a temporary crown that you will wear. Once the permanent crown returns from the dental lab, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent one in place. After this is over, you will be free to leave your dentist's office and start enjoying your new and improved smile.

Dental Bridges

While dental crowns are designed to restore broken, chipped or discolored teeth, a dental bridge can help your smile by replacing a missing tooth or teeth. A bridge is made up of two crowns that anchor the bridge on either side of the gap. In between, a false tooth or teeth fills the gap and acts as a replacement for your missing tooth or teeth.

After deciding that a dental bridge is the right option for you, your dentist will begin the process by applying local anesthetic and filing down the two anchor teeth in preparation for crowns being installed on them. He or she will then take an impression of the area where the bridge will go. During the two weeks that you are waiting for your permanent crown to come in, you will wear a temporary bridge that your dentist will provide. Once the permanent bridge comes in, your dentist will cement it into place after checking to make sure it fits and the coloring is correct.
