It's pretty easy to get information about head lice
, but knowing what you need to do to treat them is only half the story. It's just as important that you learn what you should not do-at least, in my experience, you need to get all the head lice facts you can.
There is absolutely no need for anyone to subject a child to the toxins in medically prescribed substances just to get rid of head lice. That is, pardon the pun, an over-kill!
Why?
Because anyone suffering from the irritation of lice does not need to be dealing with the side effects of poisonous insecticides and pesticides on top of the lice.
Lindane is the primary poison I'm talking about here. Not only is it a known carcinogen, but it can equate to side effects as serious as seizures-and hold onto your hat-death! Why on earth would any loving parent ever use a neurotoxin like that on a child?
I am pleased to hear that there is an initiative promulgated by Consumer Reports for the FDA to remove this poison from its list of approved drugs, and the sooner the better!
Head lice over the years also have developed an immunity to commonly used over the counter insecticides like Rid, Pronto, Nix, and Clear (which have as their main ingredient either pyrethrin or permethrin-both toxic), and so they are now ineffective in any case.
So let's apply common sense and wisdom here and instead go for the many home remedies and alternative ways to approach this problem without poisoning your child.
Realize that head lice cannot survive without a human host for very long-we're talking 24 to 48 hours. They need human blood to live. And the eggs (nits) that the female louse glues to the hair shaft close to the scalp will hatch out in 7-10 days, so they are where most of the attention has to be directed, and it's as if they have been cemented onto the hair.
Killing the adult lice and nymphs (lice teenagers) is relatively easy. All you have to do is to plug their breathing holes to smother them, and you can do that with a thick substance such as olive oil or petroleum jelly (Vaseline).
But only a nit comb is going to pull off the eggs, and the metal variety works best, as the little teeth don't break or bend easily, and the nits come off more easily.
Fact: Lice do not jump or fly; they crawl from person to person only by direct contact, head to head or by sharing combs, brushes, hats, etc.
Fact: Lice do not spread disease. They are just an irritation and annoyance in and of themselves. If the head becomes infected, it is because of over-zealous scratching on the part of the victim.
Fact: Household pets do not spread lice.
Fact: Head lice are not a result of poor hygiene.
Fact: Lice prefer clean heads, rather than one that has been subjected to gel, mousse, or hairspray, because it is much easier for the lice to cling to clean hair than hair that is not so clean.
Fact: Head lice come only from another human or from items an infested person has used.
Fact: There are more than 12 million cases every year in the U.S. alone.
Fact: Any clothing that the head lice victim has worn can be completely freed from lice or eggs merely by throwing it in a clothes dryer on high heat for half an hour or so.
Fact: It is much more probable that children will be infested with head lice than adults because of their close play with other children.
Fact: The tried and true home remedies work today just as well as they did in years past, and that includes tea tree oil (which lice detest), geranium oil, rosemary oil, lavender oil, and citronella.
