Cuba Libre Cocktail: An Amazing Highball

The lateral meaning of Cuba Libre is Free Cuba and a cocktail with this name is a

high level drink made of the mixture of white rum, coca cola and lime. In Canada, US, Ireland and UK this drink is known as Coke and Rum, lime being optional, as a relaxant drink.

The highball drink has refreshing and delicious effect around the year as a cocktail of two enticing flavors. This classic drink with three ingredients has an interesting history since nineteenth century. Though nothing authenticated is available in history as some believe on its origin in Havana in 1901 and other believe in Bacardi in 1898.

The believers of Barcardi origin says it was invented during a rift between America and Spain by the Americans who arrived in Cuba for its liberation. An American, Fausto Rodriguez, a young messenger, later known as Captain Russell ordered the bar tender of a restaurant, occupied by the off-duty American soldiers, for Bacardi Rum with Coca Cola on rocks with lime. The blend was enjoyed by the captain in such a way that everyone present in the restaurant was eager to taste the new drink. They all ordered captain's drink to the bartender which hit them instantly. The drink was later repeated as a toast for the celebration of the freedom of Cuba and hence named as Cuba Libre cocktail. They all sang the freedom songs and celebrated the occasion of victory and freedom of Cuba.

But the non-availability of Coca Cola in Cuba till year 1900 had made people to disbelieve the above said concept is invention of this highball drink. Later it was revealed that it was mixed for the first time in 1901 in a Cuban bar by an American member of U.S. Signal Corps. Though the history of Cuba Libre is not confirmed but it is a fact that it was sipped for the first time in Cuba by an American. Though it is true that Coca Cola was introduced in 1900 in Cuba but it is also a fact that Cuba Libre was the slogan of Cuban Liberation Army which fought liberation war in 1898 and won with the support of American troops.

Initially the drink was considered as unusual due its dark colored appearance but later it was adapted by the people in South as well as North and west America as both the ingredients, Rum and Coke, were cheap there. The highball has been used in various recipes throughout the world with some variations as per local needs.
