Making Bloody Mary's In The Garden
For those of us who are gardeners, there's a great way to use up the overflow of tomatoes that come in during July and August
. Bloody Mary's!
What could be better than a nice, cold refreshing glassful of the bloody stuff? They are really not all that complicated to make, probably the hardest part will be making the juice from your fresh tomatoes. And of course making the juice will require tomatoes other than the Italian plum style ones, as these are more meaty and have less juice.
For starters, take 8 large, washed tomatoes, stems removed, and dip them in boiling water for a minute; slip the skins off the tomatoes.
Halve the tomatoes and remove all the seeds; then chunk the tomatoes up into smaller pieces and put them in a blender. Blend them for 3 minutes. Take this pureed mixture out of the blender and put it through a fine sieve which is put over a large bowl to catch the juice. Sieve the tomato mixture once or twice, depending on how thick you like your tomato juice. Save the pulp for future use; pour the juice back in the blender container, cover and chill the juice.
Next pour this chilled juice into a tall "beverage" style glass (a highball glass will work also) to about 2/3 full, taste for acidity--if it's too acidity, you may choose to add a liquid sweetener to taste (we use about 2 drops of stevia); then pour 1/2 to 1 ounce of vodka (to taste, we don't go 'stingy' here, either on price or quantity!) plus a shot or two each of Tabasco (depends if you like heat or not), Worcestershire sauce plus a dash of lemon juice (these last three ingredients are optional, but definitely add a nice touch to the drink).
A stalk of celery and slice of lemon on the edge of the glass for decoration (or can be used in the drink itself) is always a nice touch.
A neighbor in the next apartment to ours was allowed to have a garden and occasionally would be outside in this garden of his pulling weeds, looking over things he was growing to see how they were doing, and eventually enjoying the harvests. He also loved to drink and, because our walls were thin between rooms, we would sometimes hear him come stumbling up the steps and singing. We would sometimes joke that he was raising his own bloody Mary's out in the garden. Maybe he really was...
