Cuba Vacations: In Holguin
On the way to Holguin we recommend consulting a new map that will be very useful in this part of Cuba, where you will need to see the whole area before making a decision about your next move. The map is entitled Cuba, Topographic Map. It has information in Spanish, English, French and German. It was published by GEO, 2006.
During all the tours you have been suggested to make, all along the island of Cuba (with the exception of the City of Havana), we have been taking into account the difficulties related to the hotels location, the interesting places to visit and the roads that communicate them. In Holguin there is something different and advantageous for the visitor. The hotels are spread all over the Holguin province, to the East and the West, by the coast and on the mountains.
The province has 9 300.5 km2 and 1029 627 inhabitants, it's among the largest and most populated provinces in Cuba. Holguin is one of the main tourist destinations of the country. As opposed to the central provinces, which main coastal attraction is the group of keys and beaches of the Kings Gardens, in the Western part of this province, where the coasts are high, rocky, and separated from the interior by hills situated next to the little coast plain, excellent beaches are found; in the open sea as well as inside the bunch of small bays next to each other, not far from the province capital: Holguin. The hotels are very well distributed and near these lovely places, on the coasts and in the provincial capital.
Towards the Eastern part of the province, the bays become larger; the high mountains, covered by exuberant vegetation, are very near the sea, which gives these landscapes a typical charm and where the most attractive thing are those mountains called Nipe Sagua Baracoa. Only one road travels along the narrow coastal plain and the Easternmost bays are tiny as if they were small bubbles, with very small beaches. There are also hotels in this area, on the coast and in the mountains.
Where to start our trip? We suggest going to Holguin first for two very important reasons: First, you should never go to a place without a previous reservation. From the capital city, making a choice would not be difficult. Second, Holguin has a privileged location, so it will be easy going from it anywhere.
The population is quite evenly distributed in the province, so you will always be in contact with people during your trip. The distance between Holguin and Puerto Padre is not long, about 80 km.
Holguin became a city in 1752. It is a plain territory where two small rivers flow, Jige and Maraon, which come together and cross the city. Its structure resembles a net, that is to say, it is divided into squares. The city can be seen from the top of a hill known as Loma de la Cruz (Cross Hill), formerly known as Cerro del Bayado (Bayado Hill), which is its identitying emblem. A cross is built on the top. The view from its top is very beautiful. This is the place chosen to ascend in popular "romeria" (pilgrimage) every May 3th along its 458 steps stairway, built between 1927 and 1950. This "romeria" is a very deep-rooted tradition in the city, so it will be dealt with again later.
The city is known as the "City of Parks" for it has a great amount of these public places. Of them, the most important is the one named after Calixto Garcia. Its Cathedral, dedicated to San Isidoro, is unique in its being the only catholic temple in Cuba to have a statue of Pope Juan Pablo II.
In Holguin there are three hotels where to stay, two in the city itself and another not far from it. All of them are three stars. The two firsts are Islazul Pernik and Islazul El Bosque. The third one, the Islazul Mirador de Mayabe Hotel, located on Mayabe Heights, 8 km from the city, an excellent belvedere. You can also find licensed private renting houses where to stay.
The province counts with one of the most intense cultural ambiences of the country. During the day, besides the parks, we suggest visiting the cigar factory, the Loma de la Cruz lookout, the Provincial History Museum " La Periquera", which has five rooms where you can find the complete history of the province; the San Isidoro Cathedral, the San Jose Church; an important architectonic monument built in 1815, and also the Provincial Museum of Natural Sciences " Don Carlos de la Torre y Huerta, which possesses an impressive collection on ornithology and malacology, prevalent in this last aspect the exhibitions of Liguus and Polymitas species.
We propose to visit also the Museum and Birth House of Calixto Garcia Iiguez, an important Cuban patriot during the Wars of Independence of the 19th century. In its rooms you can see manuscripts and personal belongings of that time. We recommend visiting the Eddy Suol Principal Theater too, housing the lyric theater in the province and the Cultural Center Plaza of la Marqueta, which bazaars allow you to admire or buy the works of local artists, besides enjoying an art gallery and an engraving workshop. At a few kilometers from the city is the Mayabe Belvedere, an interesting place. At night, the Cabaret is a nice choice.
If you have already visited the city, and want to go to the sea shore, other interesting options await you. If you choose to go to the place where Christopher Columbus landed in our country on October 27, 1492. The province has a lot for you to see. Enjoy your trip.
