Cuban Cigar Brands – Understanding Davidoff Cigars
Are you new to the world of buying and enjoying Cuban cigars
? Depending on where you live in the world, you may have been waiting many years to be able to enjoy your first cigar that was really grown and rolled in Cuba.
Despite the fact that the American economy seems to want to completely ignore consumer desire for these tobacco products, there are many
different Cuban cigar brands to choose from in international markets. If you're inexperienced in choosing from this selection, you should start by learning all you can about the history of certain brands, starting with Davidoff cigars.
In case you've never heard of Davidoff cigars, you might think that they were one of the original Cuban cigar brands, but you would be wrong. Davidoff is the name of the legendary Swiss tobacco brand that was started by Zino Davidoff in the 1960's.
The child of longtime tobacconists, Davidoff was destined to continue the family business. He spent time in Latin America picking up their age-old techniques for growing, curing, and rolling tobacco. Although his brand experienced modest success in Europe it wasn't until he was approached by Cuban cigar monopoly Cubatabaco after the revolution that he would reach legendary status.
It was after Cubatabaco invited Davidoff to create his own personal brand of cigars that his product would become synonymous with Cuban cigar brands. The cigars Davidoff invented would be rolled in the then brand new El Laguito factory located in Havana.
The El Laguito factor was originally established to roll the
private Cohiba cigars that were the private brand of Cuban President Fidel Castro. The first versions of Davidoff cigars that were released from the Havana factory included the No. 1, the No. 2, and Ambassadrice and Chteaux Series.
No history of famous Cuban cigar brands would be complete without political strife, and so it is fitting that disagreements eventually ended the relationship between Davidoff and Cubatabaco in August of 1989. Davidoff himself had become increasingly disappointed in the quality of tobacco and cigar craftsmanship that was coming out of Havana, and even went so far as to have a public burning of hundreds of his cigars in protest.
Today, the only way you can experience the former glory of Cuban Davidoffs is to purchase the Dominican substitute that was quickly released after the dissolution of the former partnership, and is still available on the market today.
