Cultural Himachal Pradesh

Cultural Tours: Himachal offers a range of fascinating cultural experiences

. Chosen from a wealth of memorable and amazing places to see and things to do, to create your own itinerary

Pragpur: Visit India's first "heritage village." With cobbled streets and slate-roofed houses it gives a vivid sense of how rural life has been lived in this area for the last few hundred years.

Dharamsala: Home of H.H. the Dalai Lama and base of the Tibetan Government-in-exile, Dharamsala is a former British Hill Station with a spectacular setting along a spur of the Dhauladar range. Here you can see maroon robed monks jostling with Tibetan traders, sample Tibetan food or be entertained by a traditional Opera performance at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. At the nearby Norbulingka Institute see Tibetan artists painting thangkas and craftsmen working with wood, metal and silk.

Shimla: This former summer capital of the British is part quaint English village and part modern bustling Indian state capital. A place for pleasant walks among the decaying Raj era buildings and magnificent pines and cedars, with stunning views of the Himalayan foothills.

Sarahan: From Shimla follow the spectacular and dramatic course of the Sutlej river to reach Sarahan. This attractive town surrounded by high peaks has a palace complex containing two stuningly carved wooden temples, in a mixture of Hindu and Buddhist styles.

Kangra valley narrow gauge railway: This little known but very much working service links Pathankot in the west with Jogindernagar via Kangra and Baijnath. The views of the Kangra Valley are beautiful and spectacular. Stop along the leisurely journey to visit the spectacular Fort at Kangra, Jawalamukhi - one of the most popular Hindu pilgrimage sites in Himachal, the pleasant town of Palampur set amongst tea gardens, the pretty village of Andretta with its art gallery and pottery, or Baijnath with its beautiful old temples.

Naggar: Travel through the apple orchards of the Kullu Valley to reach peaceful Naggar with its interesting castle and enchanting views over the valley. Nearby is the Roerich Art Gallery, former home of the Russian artist and peace activist Nicholas Roerich. Roerich worked with Diaghilev and Stravinsky in his youth, later traveling widely in Asia and settling in India. It has a striking collection of his pastels and photographs.

Gaddi music and dance: Enjoy evenings of traditional Gaddi entertainment. The Gaddi are semi nomadic shepherds who can be often be seen with their flocks of sheep and goats on the roads and in the high pastures of Himachal. The men wear distinctive white homespun woolen garments tied with a black woolen rope or dora. You can add some more her about the music and dance etc!
