The style world is fickle, and what defines fashionable glasses for women changes year to year

. You can always get the newest glasses online to keep up with fashion, but that can be expensive. It's a good idea to try and identify aspects of trends that have been constant for a few years if you want to get glasses that you can wear for a longer period of time without falling out of fashion. Currently, the best way to do this is by finding a pair of thick-rimmed glasses that fits your face.

Nerd glasses have been "in" for a few years. The trend may have started with the resurgence of traditional Ray-Bans in the early 2000s. They certainly signaled a move away from the cool of the 1990s and a return to more exaggerated styles and a somewhat retro feel. Regardless, the popularity of this shift can be seen in the thicker frames that have become commonplace even for reading glasses targeted at people passed middle-aged.

In 2012 it's almost impossible to go a day without seeing a stylish person or celebrity sporting thicker sunglasses. The difference from previous years is that those pushing the envelope of fashionable glasses are going even more retro, opting for exaggerated cat-eye frames or odd-shaped frames like hearts. Even if you don't want to go that far into the fore, you should consider more retro frames that eschew any modern, angular styling and feature bold colors ranging from jet black to sharp pinks and oranges. Even otherwise regular sunglasses with just a little color will look new while still embracing the core elements of recent style that will make them a reasonable fashion accessory for a few years.

Of course, oversized frames with varying degrees of darkness remain a staple, whether for a relaxed weekend morning or a weekday on the go. Along with channeling the "horn-rimmed" style, big glasses are a very reliable choice as far as keeping your outfit options open without looking "safe" or "boring."

On the other hand, it's easy to identify what's out. Aviators have once again been relegated to mustachioed policemen or those who wear them ironically. Sporty frames are similarly a less desirable option except when their performance is necessary. And the original Ray-Bans and square frames that started the thick frame tend a few years ago are now just normal for a wide range of people.

There are some clear trends in what defines fashionable sunglasses now, as well as in what will remain cool for years to come without forcing slightly more conservative tastes to embrace to wild a style.
