Safety Plans are as unique as the facility in which they are utilized
. Each different facility has different requirements or challenges to address to keep the employees safe during their daily activities. Many companies do not have a full time safety consultant onsite, but can reap many of the benefits by calling in an outside Certified Safety Professional.
A Certified Safety Professional (CSP) can work with the company by visiting the facility first hand and witnessing the needs of the facility. The CSP will witness different job roles perform their duties to watch the potential hazards the employee might encounter on a regular basis. A detailed report will then be compiled that documents the findings while at the facility, as well as making recommendations for improvement. The recommendations should be able to be immediately implemented to start impacting the employees right away.
Recommendations could include providing specific types of Personal Protection Equipment to certain job roles. A painter may require a full body suit to safe guard their clothing, a respirator to protect their breathing, a face guard to protect paint spray from splashing in their eyes, and other equipment. A welder would need very different equipment to stay safe or utilize similar equipment that is designed to protect against a very different hazard. For instance, a face guard may be used by the welder, but need to protect against the intense light and metal shards flying.
The Certified Safety Professional has the training and experience to identify the potential hazards at the workplace and recommend the most appropriate equipment for the employees to utilize while on the jobsite. The CSP can also help implement a culture of safety to ensure the employees are actively utilizing the equipment being provided, and teaching the employees why the equipment is important. The culture starts with the company requiring the safety procedures to be followed by the employees at all times. Safety classes should also be held on a regular basis to ensure procedures are fresh in the employees minds.
