Custom Shirts: Your First And Last Line Of Defense

The first piece and the last piece of clothing that a man puts on is his dress shirt

. It is the one piece of clothing that touches his skin. The feel of a crisp, clean custom shirt that hugs the body contours of the wearer can make a man feel confident, in control and even invincible.

However, getting that perfect fit of tailor shirts with all the quirkiness and nuances of a mans body contour and figuration is not an easy feat even for a highly skilled tailor.

There would be times when a tailor would need to craft two to three pieces of custom shirt and design shirts for a particular client just to get that flawless fit.

So how you would know that you are in the right direction?

First of all, tailoring experts could never emphasize this enough; know your own size measurements especially your neck size and arm length. Its not like you change measurements every single day but sometimes measurements on neck and arms length changes and differ every time it is measured so tailor experts must know what is the most precise and accurate size and length of those measurements.

This is vital whether you are merely buying a ready to wear dress shirt at a department store or getting fitted up at a tailoring shop because youll never know that the shirts you bought might not be fit to you when you wear them.

Even if you have a personal tailor for your custom shirts, it is still your responsibility to have a basic grasp of the elements of what makes a great looking dress shirt great and what kind of style you want to wear for every single day.

The One Finger Rule

One of the most crucial elements of fitted shirts is the fit of the collar. Obviously, a too tight collar will be quite uncomfortable for the wearer and will restrict movement. A too-loose collar, on the other hand, will hang baggily on the mans body.

The rule is to make sure that you can comfortably fit one finger between the collar and your neck. If you can fit in two fingers, then the collar is a tad sized bigger on you.

No Balloon Rule

Dress shirts are supposedly the last line of defense of any man after he takes off his suit jacket; therefore, he should be made to feel confident enough to know that he would still look well polished and elegant in his custom shirt.

But if there is one element of a shirt that can ruin an overall elegant look is when the wearer appears to be hiding a balloon under his shirt. No matter your body shape, there is no excuse for this type of craftsmanship. Your dress shirt should always accentuate your silhouette cut.

The Sleeves Rule

Another vital element is the length of the shirt sleeves. The important thing to remember here is that when unbuttoned, the cuffs should reach just past your wrists.

Indeed, a mans custom shirt should be as flawless as possible. After all, it is the first as well as the last piece of clothing that he puts on; the so-called last line of defense and the last chance to make a good impression.
