Cut The Ties With Your Cable or Satellite Provider

Cut The Ties With Your Cable or Satellite Provider

Even if you are stuck in a contract, you might find that paying out the contract and cutting those ties will be less expensive in the long wrong. What are your options?

As a country, we, the American people, have a love affair with our television sets. Most of us don't have near enough time to watch what we'd like to, which is why the DVR is so very important to us, but then do we have enough time to watch what we've recorded? Do you sometimes long for a much simpler time when watching TV was a much more enjoyable pastime and you didn't hate to open that cable or satellite bill each month? Me too!

There are just some shows that I don't want to miss. Everyone has their favorites and at the end of the day, usually only after about 7 p.m. in the winter, and after 9 p.m. in the summer, I want to be able to sit down and enjoy my shows. ButI absolutely HATE paying that exorbitant satellite bill. In some ways I don't have a choice. I live 75 miles from the nearest television station, with nothing in between. Cable is not available in my area and an antenna hasn't a chance of picking up a signal from that far away with any reliability, But, the only premium channel I buy is Starz and still my bill is over $90.00 a month, and that's without any pay-per-view movies either. I certainly don't have the time to watch those!

So, my options may be limited to reducing my Satellite bill by a few dollars, by reducing the size of the package I subscribe to. I can also do away with Starz and pay $9 a month for Netflix. I even have a Wii, so I can get movies through theremore movies than I currently have access to and for less than what Starz costs me. But, I haven't made that call yet. And I have to ask myself Why?'

Now, your options may be even better. A growing trend in the U.S. is the use of antennas. First off, the antennas of today are absolutely nothing compared to your Grandparents' antennas. They are usually small, inconspicuous and are not overly expensive. In metropolitan areas, and even in the suburbs, antennas can bring in all of the local programming that you pay a ridiculous $5.00 a month for on most plans. You can even get your programming in HD if you have an HDTV. Then, you can stream movies from the internet for free with the use of an HDMI cable, or you can subscribe to a service like Netflix for quite a bit less than what it would cost you to buy movies on DVD or for any of the premium channels, such as HBO, CINEMAX or SHOWTIME. In fact, you can even get local programming for free from the internet. Hulu.com is one of the most common free services and most networks will also make their shows available online within a day or two of airing them. It takes a little bit of work and you won't be able to watch them as they air, but isn't it worth it to save almost $100 a month? In some cases, it's much more than that.

Now, to answer the why' above. Part of it is loyalty. I have been with the same Satellite Provider for a long time. In fact, at one time I threatened to go to the "other guy" and they made me a deal I couldn't refuse. They want to keep those customers that pay their bills on time, so they gave me a free premium channel and reduced my bill by $15 each month for a full year. Yep, I stayed. And last year I was rewarded with FREE Showtime for a year, though I probably would have preferred to have another monetary discount. I don't have the time to watch much Showtime. But, the point is, they made me feel wanted and they keep making me feel wanted and "loved", soI stay. This is why they do what they do. So, one way to save, at least for the next year, is to threaten to leave, but only if you're pretty confident that they will pay you to stay.

So, now that I've confessed to being a wimp, I'm vowing to make that call. I WILL reduce my current package and not let them convince me to do otherwise. If I could, I would switch to an antenna and cancel it all together. I'll subscribe to Netflix and watch movies when I want, for much less than I've been paying. If I could, I'd stream movies and programming from the internet, but my old big screen doesn't have HDMI capabilities, so that will have to wait until I'm ready to spend the money on a new TV. Maybe I'll put the money that I'll save when I reduce my package under my mattress and buy a new TV with it. OrI'll pay off my credit cards quicker and become debt-free and THEN buy a new TV that will allow me to save much more.

So, what's your excuse?
