Cymbidium Orchids - 4 Key Tips For Their Growth And Health

Cymbidium Orchids are one of the most popular spring and winter blooming orchids

. They are best placed in your patio because its breath taking flowers are ideal for patio or home decorations. From the time the flower buds open, the flowers will remain in bloom for up to 3 (three) months thus, making them one of the easiest and very rewarding orchids to tend.

Cymbidiums are commonly used in corsages and decorations because of the large flowers that they produce. A spike can produce up to 30 flower buds in which each of them measures up to six inches. This kind of orchid is very pretty and easily reproduced as long as you have the right knowledge to do so. If you are looking forward to growing this species of orchids, you need to be knowledgeable on the proper care techniques which are very critical to their growth and health.

1.) The orchids should be exposed to enough light for their cultivation to be a success and they grow their best when they are kept outdoors majority of the time. However, you should avoid exposing them to intense direct sunlight (ie midday sun rays) because too much heat from the sun can burn their leaves. Make sure that you place them in your patio where they are covered from direct sunlight. Cymbidiums can tolerate direct morning and afternoon sun as long as the exposure happens gradually. Maximum lighting tolerance is indicated by light green leaves with a hint of yellow, while dark green leaves mean that they are not exposed to enough light.

2.) Depending on the temperature, Cymbidium orchids should only be watered at least once or twice in a week. On hotter temperatures and seasons, the orchids can be watered every four to five days. This species of orchids prefer to be placed on a moist pot meaning, they do not like to be left in too much standing water. As much as possible, try watering them early in the morning so that they will be dry during the night.

3.) If you want your Cymbidiums to live longer, you will need to place them in a proper medium for the orchids to grow and bloom successfully. This species of orchids does not grow in common potting soil that can be bought from any greenhouse or garden soil. You are required to use a special mix of organic matter such as bark compost, fir bark, osmunda fiber and sometimes even peat moss as their planting medium. There are also ready made mixes if you are not really comfortable in making them yourself and they also contain all the materials that are organic and essential for your orchids growth.

4.) Cymbidiums are best kept when they are in their pot. This only means that you should not disturb your orchids too much and only do repotting if you see the bulbs up against the pots edge. You may want to wait until the plant has already bloomed before repotting. Water it lightly after successfully transferring it to another pot.
