What Will The State Of Your Body Be When It Comes Time To Retire?
It is an awful thought but there may not be much left of you when it comes time to retire
. You may have worked hard all those years and have done everything right, but in the end your health and your body fail you. That trip overseas that you had always dreamed of may not be possible or you may not be able to play golf and go swimming like you thought you would. Play tennis, hike, exercise and work in your garden and around your house - maybe?
Or even if you do not plan to be particularly active in retirement, and your desire is to pursue more passive activities will your retirement years be upset by illness or chronic back or hip pain, or some other health condition or disability that demands much of your attention?
We do not break down all at once - it is a slow gradual process over years and decades. Life does give us a grace period with regard to our human body. For much of our lives, for the most part when we are younger, our body works away like a faithful servant in the background keeping our body running smoothly without question or complaint.
For years it has put up with our weekend warrior attempts, our late nights on the town, our no exercise lifestyle, sitting for most of the day, poor food choices, long periods of inactivity, and decades of limited repetitive activity.
But then after a certain point, often after a certain age your body says 'enough is enough'. Joints start to hurt and make themselves known or rather felt. "I can't move the lawn my back isn't what it used to be". Or "I can't walk that far park the car closer". It hurts to move and be active - so we stop. It is like we hit a point where the wheels just fall off.
This progressive loss of function is not something that occurs out of the blue. It has really been happening for many years underneath the surface and it is only when something reaches that critical tipping point that we even become aware there is a problem.
Muscle weakness and joint loss of function sneak up on up. The process is insidious as we lose a bit here and a bit there and before we know it we have lost a lot. We then stop doing things we used to enjoy - a sport or activity we used to love. The last stop is when we hire someone to do what we used to easily do ourselves.
Our inactive and sedentary modern world is causing this loss of function , muscle and joint pain and the subsequent disability at much younger ages - 20's, 30's, 40's.
Proper exercise of course puts the brakes on this creeping loss of strength and function and for most of us is something we should do, but 8 out of 10 adults choose not to.
Sure we can live like this for many years and continue experiencing even more decline in overall heath - and maybe even a disease or two chucked in as well.
We usually do not do anything until something dramatic happens - a serious injury, chronic pain, a shocking diagnosis that will shove us into the reality that our health and wellness is our own responsibility and no one else's.
No matter where you are in this cycle of self neglect and disuse you can pick up the reins and become the driver of your own ship. A proper exercise program made up of mostly strength training exercise is the very first thing you should do 2-3 times each week to build back your strength and body function. Next ditch as many processed foods from your diet as is possible and replace them with whole foods cooked from scratch.
Do not allow laziness and apathy to rob you of your health (and maybe your life). You are the one with the power to change this situation and turn it completely around no matter your age. No matter how bad things are those two solutions just mentioned are all that is needed to rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit.
