Cystic Acne - What is it and What is the Treatment? by:Gerrald Hendrix

Cystic acne, considered one of the severest types

, is also one of the most challenging to control and cure. Rarely seen in developing countries, yet reaching near epidemic proportions in the USA in relationship to all types, some experts see it as yet another symptom of western diets and eating habits. Characterized by large pus filled cysts, these raised, red nodules are not only painful physically but emotionally. Most sufferers are teenage boys, stricken at a time of life when concern for appearance and popularity is at its highest. Treatment will necessarily be more aggressive than with milder conditions, but be encouraged you have many options.

Maybe the easiest way to think of this form of severe acne is that the activity is at a much deeper level. The causes are the same as for milder forms. Excessive build up of oil, or sebum, deep within the skins pores, combined with dead skin cells, forming an environment in which bacteria breeds, leading to inflammation and the resulting painful nodules. Cystic acne most commonly appears on the face, neck, shoulders and back. And while common mostly in young males, this condition is not uncommon in adults and women, especially during menstruation or pregnancy. Symptoms may last for months and so may the treatments.

Natural treatments and remedies alone will probably not be nearly as effective as with milder cases, but the basic rules of cleanliness and care still apply. Just be sure to use a mild cleanser and gently clean the areas to avoid further irritation. Overall wellness counts. Stress relief methods may be employed not only as deterrent against outbreaks, but as an aid to the additional stress during outbreaks. Diet is another factor. Nutrition alone may not be a cure, but many fruits, vegetables and nuts contain natural elements that aid in healing and prevention of diseases. As stated earlier, some experts believe our highly processed and unnatural diets are a contributor, lacking in proper nutrition and leading to constipation. Constipation inhibits the body's ability to cleanse itself of toxins and wastes efficiently.

Peels of various types may be effective, as well as red light treatment and dermabrasion. Some OTC (over the counter) products you might consider using would include salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide applied topically. Typically most skin creams provide very little in prevention.

Resist against all temptations to squeeze the cysts as that can "drive" the infection deeper and actually worsen the condition. Treatments of the lesions themselves should be by a dermatologist only. If the swelling can not be reduced, they may choose to use surgical lancing. The idea is to treat and relieve the swelled area without scarring. Your dermatologist will know the options, and just as importantly the precautions. Powerful antibiotics may also be used, but they tend to have side effects and will not be suitable at all in some instances.

Many doctors or dermatologists will try less aggressive methods first, but severe cases of cystic acne may require very powerful prescriptions. These may include Isotretinoin or Accutane. Taken orally once or twice a day for 16 to 20 weeks, the strategy is to reduce the size of the oil gland, thus reducing the amount of oil production. Even then you may not see optimal results for several months. With these powerful drugs come a host of warnings and precautions. Side effects such as thinning hair, depression, dry skin, eyes and lips, and severe birth defects limit the use of Accutane and stress the obvious need for professional diagnosis and prescription.

As with any form of treatment for any condition, treating cystic acne can be a challenge. All conditions are not the same and all people do not respond the same. First, don't assume anything without professional consultation. The facts presented here are for information only. Your doctor or dermatologist will be able diagnose your condition and present you with all the options and pros and cons. Do all you can, and follow all that they recommend, until you're acne free.
