Dallas Cowboys Tickets - The Cowboys Need A Win Against The Bears
An ugly opening night loss to the Washington Redskins wasn't exactly what Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had in mind
. With supposedly one of the most explosive offenses in the entire league, the Cowboys offense handed over as many points as they scored and struggled with playing by the rules throughout the game. With almost twice as many penalties as points, the Cowboys didn't look like a team destined to go to the Super Bowl. But lucky for them, it was only Week One. This week, the Cowboys have a new chance to prove themselves at home against a Bears team that barely clipped the Detroit Lions to start the season. If the Cowboys have any hope of meeting their lofty expectations, it's also a game they'll need to show some signs of life.
As other teams seemed to prove in Week One, it seems like it's getting harder in the NFL to win by concentrating solely on the pass. This certainly doesn't mean that the league is shifting back to a run-first offensive style, but teams that were one-dimensional in week one lost nearly across the board. Peyton Manning threw for more than 400 yards and the Colts lost by 10. Carson Palmer had one of the most prolific throwing days of his career and the Bengals were never even really in the game with the Patriots. Even in rain-soaked Arrowhead, Philip Rivers badly outperformed counterpart Matt Cassel and the Chargers lost by seven. Only the Patriots with their excellent blocking veteran running backs were able to dominate a week one opponent by concentrating on the pass.
The Cowboys also certainly fell into this trap. Quarterback Tony Romo's stats actually looked fairly good after the game but the Cowboys never were able to really establish the run. With one of the best groups of backs in the league - if not the best - the Cowboys have plenty of talent to keep an offensive balance. While this may have formerly seemed like a luxury, it now appears that teams will be forced to get a running game going to keep defenses on their heels.
The bright side for the Cowboys, however, is that they still nearly pulled off the win in Week One despite their shortcomings. Even though their offense looked less than stellar for much of the night, Romo still led the Cowboys on an impressive late-game drive that nearly toppled the Redskins. Had it not been for a holding call on the game's final play, wiping out the potential go-ahead touchdown, the Cowboys would have probably escaped with a win. As the Ravens proved with their win against the Jets, good teams find a way to win ugly, and the Cowboys nearly were able to do just that.
The reason they were able to hang in the game, of course, was a defense that almost completely shut down Donovan McNabb and the Redskin attack. The Cowboys D actually only let up two field goals as the other Redskins score came on a defensive touchdown at the end of the first half. Heading into the season, it appeared that the Cowboys defense was the underrated unit not getting quite the same level of attention as the offense, which is something that may not last if the offense continues to struggle and the defense maintains their strong play. The offense may sell plenty of Dallas Cowboys tickets but they also need to turn their explosive talent into a few wins this season as well.
This weekend, though, the Cowboys have a much easier matchup against the Bears on their home turf. Winning on the road within the division - particularly in Week One - is never easy and now they get to have their home crowd behind them in a matchup where they are clearly the more talented overall team. Even though Bears QB Jay Cutler had a nice statistical game in week one, he's still prone to turnovers and the Bears would have been slapped with a loss in Week One had Lions receiver Calvin Johnson held on to the ball as he got up to celebrate a go-ahead touchdown catch.
As far as matchups in the NFL go, the Bears matchup is one of the easiest the Cowboys will have all year and they badly need to get on the scoreboard in 2010. Losing will knock them to 0-2 and 0-3 will then become a potential reality as they will travel to Houston to take on the Texans in Week Three. It's a long season that will have plenty of ups and downs but teams usually don't have a chance after losing their first three games of the season. Though not a must-win situation for the Cowboys, the game against the Bears in Week Two isn't far off.
