Roofing accidents continue to keep our hospitals and compensation companies busy. As another story emerges in the press about an unfortunate incident, it's clear that any sort of roofing repair should be carried out by a professional.

It goes without saying that falls make up a large proportion of all roofing accidents - and deaths. Most experts wouldn't work alone, as the vigorous task of tearing up tiles and roof covers on a slant can easily result in someone losing their balance and falling. Falling from great heights, of course, can cause terrible if not fatal injuries.

Equally, brittle or rotting surfaces and skylights are just an accident waiting to happen, particularly if an adequate risk assessment has not first been carried out. One website reports the story where not one or two but three workers fell through the skylights in the same building.

A man sent to photograph the scene where the first worker fell, then fell himself. A third man, sent to mend the broken skylights did the same. The Health & Safety Executive blamed the lack of risk assessment.

Burns are also fairly common 'up on the roof'. Working with hot tar - which not only burns but sticks to the skin due to its viscous form - requires immediate medical attention and is not for amateurs.

Additionally the point to be considered that, the weather might be blamed for many accidents, but why decide to go up there in the wind and rain? The after-effects of a downpour can have disastrous effects, leaving behind black ice and slimy algae.

Another reason to call a professional is asbestos, which is not so much of a worry for modern housing, but anything older than about 25 years could have been constructed using it. Asbestos must be disposed of as hazardous waste, as breathing it in can have serious health effects.

A professional roofer should know their scrim from their waterproof membrane; their spray on sealant from their aluminium bandage. They should know their health and safety, too. So if your roof needs fixing, don't do it yourself - call someone who knows what they are doing.
