Prior to this, he went to the Maurice-Orange City High School, whereby, he was a National Merit Finalist, and was also awarded the William Randolph Hearst Foundation Senate Youth Program scholarship.

From 1977 to 1980, Daniel DeKoter attended the University of Iowa Law School, whereby, he graduated in the top 20% of his law school class. Later, in June In 1980, he passed the Iowa bar examination and completed his Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa, and later joined Corcoran, Skiver and Zito law firm in Sibley, Iowa. He is a Martindale-Hubbell AV rated lawyer and a general practitioner, with expertise in the areas of civil litigation (personal injury, insurance defense, and business disputes), business and employment law, and estate planning and administration. Furthermore, he is currently serving on the Village Northwest Unlimited Board and East Oaks Estates Property Owners Association. Besides, he was a past member of the Sibley Library Board, Sibley Kiwanis, Iowa State Bar Association Legal Forms Committee (chair), Northwest Iowa Humane Society (president), as well as several church boards.

Apart from being a highly knowledgeable and experienced legal professional, Daniel DeKoter is also a keen social worker. He significantly donates to the Sibley-Ocheyedan Community School District; the Sibley Public Library; the Ocheyedan Public Library; the Ashton Public Library; the Melvin Public Library; the Sanborn Public Library; and the George Public Library.
