Data Relocation May Mean Different Things In Different Situations

When the term Data Relocation is used, the particular context of the usage is more important than the actual words themselves

. This is because it will mean different things to different people.

Personal data relocation can refer to something as simple as backing up your personal computer. It is the sort of thing everyone knows is important but often does not follow up on. It can also mean keeping an off site copy of your personal hard drive.

Corporations, on the other hand, will see the term as referring to off site storage of critical data either to safe guard it from natural disasters or as a hedge against loss from unstable political situations. And there are companies that provide the service of date relocation to those who need it.

Off site back up is common for many companies whether large, multinational or small. It is the individual who seems to forget that loss of records can be just as traumatic for them as for the big boys. Imagine losing everything at tax time.

Data Storage companies can provide relocation services in as many ways as clients want or ask for. There are hard copy vaults for manuscripts and priceless historical documents. Some of these are rated for anything up to atomic attacks. Access is understandably restricted.

Online or cloud storage is making a dent in this area. But perhaps the paperless society should allow at least a could more years to transpire. Destroying old records can be as problematic as storing them. With the increasing sophistication of technology, it is more and more difficult to totally destroy magnetic or hard copy data. A simple reformat just does not cut it any more. You will likely need to melt, smelt or pulverize any storage medium that you want beyond reach.

Lighter and smaller magnetic media as well as paper can be shredded either in your home office shredder or professional companies. The professionals now have to secure the resulting waste to insure that security is complete. Burning the shredded product or chemically reducing it to sludge are just two of the methods.

The very medium that is used for Data Relocation is vast. From tape drives, yes they still exist, to flash drives and everything in between. There is a medium that will do the job of carrying your data around for you. But nothing will ever replace backing up the originals.
