Dublin, Ireland's capital city, lies on Dublin Bay and overlooks the Irish Sea that divides Ireland and Great Britain
. . Dublin is divided by the River Liffey. On the north side of the Liffey is O'Connell Street--the main thoroughfare, which is intersected by numerous shopping streets, including Henry Street and Talbot Street. On the south side are St. Stephen's Green, Grafton Street, Trinity College, Christ Church and St. Patrick's Cathedrals, and many other attractions. Its vibrancy, nightlife and tourist attractions are noteworthy, and it is the most popular entry point for international visitors to Ireland. The city ranks among the top tourist destinations in Europe and in the last decade there has been an economic boom, which has seen areas of Dublin change dramatically. Many historical areas have been rejuvenated and restored; new shopping centers have arrived along with restaurants, clubs and bars, making this a very exciting place to stay.
Visiting Dublin, who have a day of and are looking for something different to do. Some of these are free, and some cost money, but all are something a little different from the standard.
A great free Day Trip to take while in Dublin is a visit to Howth Head. This is a small peninsula just north of Dublin where, when you climb to the summit, you can get a spectacular view of Dublin City set against the Dublin Mountains in the background. It should be warned that this should only really be attempted during clear weather, as when its cloudy there can be no or very little visibility.
Bray Head is another great viewing area of the city centre. Just South of Dublin, Bray is in County Wicklow, known as 'The Garden of Ireland'. Bray is an old seaside resort, which has now mostly been integrated into County Dublin, as part of its suburbs. There is a nice beach and promenade there, as well as the 'Head' itself. This is a large hill/mountain, beside the sea which from the top offers a great view of the city and Howth Head in the background if its a nice day and visibility is good.
Another good idea for something different is a trip to Kilternan, Dublin, and a day skiing or snowboarding on their artificial slopes. You don't have to have ever been skiing or snowboarding before as they offer classes by qualified instructors who teach from a beginner to an expert level. All the equipment is also supplied there.
Another idea for something different is a day or evening karting. Kylemore Karting, located in Kyle more Industrial Estate, Dublin 10, which is on Dublin's North side, offer a great carting experience. They include all the driving gear, Race Commentaries, Computerized timing and scoring system and Electronic leader board with driver lap times.
Much of central Dublin is filled with beautiful period buildings with elegant Georgian architecture. This city is unfortunately a fairly expensive place to look for accommodation, especially during the busy peak season, between the months of May to September. Hotels are at their most pricey on the southern side of the River Iffey, where central locations include O'Connell Street, Temple Bar and Trinity College. However, the relatively recent addition of the city's popular Luas tramline now means that cheaper hotels within the city's suburbs are far easier to reach.
