Be Helpful

When there is a lot of traffic and things going on outside of the vehicle, it is helpful for the passenger to be conscious of what is going on. Drivers can not see everything at once so it helps to have a passenger alert to cars pulling out or other potential dangers. It is also important for a co-pilot to stay out of the way of a driver's visual field.

Control Your Anxieties

As a passenger, it is easy to feel out of control and react badly when it appears something might' happen. Yelling, shrieking, or excitedly grabbing for the dashboard can actually cause the driver to lose focus and hit something. A driver will react first to you then to everything outside of the car. Remain calm. If anxieties are too much, sit in the backseat and focus on something besides what's happening on the road. If you choose to sit in the back, resist becoming a typical backseat driver and let the driver do his job without your interference.

Avoid the Phone

Just like a driver should never talk or text while driving, a passenger on the phone can be almost as distracting. The driver has no choice but to listen to your conversation which can cause them to lose focus on the road. If you must talk, keep the conversation short and return to helping the driver.

Be a Courteous Co-Pilot

In the same way you should avoid a cell phone conversation, you should also respect the driver's space. Make sure they are comfortable, have room for their drinks, and things they need within easy reach before you start commandeering space for yourself. Leave the radio alone unless the driver has consented to you selecting the music. If you don't get to take charge of the radio, don't blast the music.
