Dealership can't seem to resolve a warranty related issue on my vehicle, what can I do?

You have recently purchased a brand new vehicle from a brand name thinking you should be able to enjoy trouble free motoring for the next few years

. You thought by purchasing a brand new car, you will avoid any mechanical repairs or issues other than regular maintenance. Maybe your vehicle has recently developed an annoying sound or mechanical behavior. You are not sure what it is, but it is not affecting the vehicle's performance. You thought the issue will be quickly resolved the next time you bring it in for an oil change, but to your surprise when you described the problem to the dealership service advisor, he or she seems to be oblivious to your story. Made sure he or she noted the problem in the computer system, the service advisor will pleasantly inform you the technician will diagnose the problem free of charge. What goes on behind the scene maybe shocking to you, but it will certainly help explaining the situation. Big dealership technicians don't work on hourly pay, they do not get paid if there is no work for the day. And when they do get paid, the amount of pay is determined by the size of the job. Technicians love to fix brakes since they are probably the easiest piece of equipment to repair or replace on your car, you can probably do it yourself! Not only it is simple to do, but it also pays well, one hour pay for something that can be done within 30 minutes or less and since you are not going to argue when it comes to your safety, it is an easy job to sell.

So you may have brought your car in for a funny noise in a cold start, but you ended up paying $1200 for unrelated, even sometimes unnecessary work that deals with your brake system. A great way to tell if your technician you is experienced or has expertise is to ask him to diagnose an electrical, or noise related problem. If he tells you he can not duplicate the problem, but recommend you to replace all your brake pads as well as machine the rotors. He is basically saying to you "I don't want to waste my time and may not get paid for a problem that I can't solve anyways. Since you are here and I need to feed my family therefore I will repair your brakes instead." In a nut shell many of the big dealerships can't solve even some of the common problems on your car, but instead they love to fix brake pads and rotors. They may advertise a great deal on oil changes just to get you into the door to repair brakes. It may sound unbelievable to you, but if you compare all the work orders for one day for different customers, you will soon realize they are very much the same.

What can you do to ensure the technician can solve your problem? Well simple, make a big fuzz about it, and cause a scene. To some of you readers you may not be the problematic type, but trust me it is the only way you can get an answer out of them. Your local service department manager has a lot of issues to deal with; the last thing he wants to face is another customer complaint. So get yourself noticed, write him an email and forward a copy to the manufacture customer relations department. Bring in the car to service department along with a printed copy of your email forcing them to give you an answer.
