Chin Up:
Stress and Depression
August 8, 2002
Dear Mom:
I understand you have been feeling a little depressed lately. Not for any specific reason; just because life, at times, can be overwhelming. Well chin up mom! God will not allow His followers to be sad for too long!
I met a very interesting man just the other day. I'm sure you have read about him. His name is Job. Talk about being overwhelmed by life. Job was a Godly man during his time on earth and always tried to do what right in the eyes of God and God blessed him.
Satan came to God one day and said the only reason Job loved and obeyed God was because God had blessed Job with so much. God agreed to allow Satan to test Job any way he wanted, short of killing him.
Satan proceeded to take everything away from Job. Satan took Job's wealth and killed Job's seven sons and three daughters. When this did not stop Job from worshiping God, Satan attacked Job's body. He gave Job boils from the top of Job's head to the bottom of his feet.
Even Job's three best friends became convinced that God was punishing Job for some wicked deeds he had done, but was unwilling to admit to. Even Job's wife told him to stop trying to be godly and went so far as to tell Job to curse God and die.
Talk about peer pressure. No one on earth, literally, was standing with Job. His wife and his three best friends all believed Job was at fault. They were convinced that God was punishing Job and they chastised him for his wicked deeds. Can it get any worse or lonelier than that?
When Job became weary and worn out from standing alone, he questioned God's actions. God response was to remind Job that He alone is God and that we may not always be able to understand Him, but we must always trust in Him and His plan for us.
Guess what happened next. Job wholeheartedly apologized to God for his arrogance and Satan once again walked away from yet another unfinished conversation with God.
Even though I have only been in heaven a short time I know that one's of God's greatest pleasures with us is when we stand firm in our belief in Him, in His Son and in the Holy Spirit.
Unlike Job, we were given some powerful tools to help us deal with life's troubles. The Bible and the Christian Church for instance.
Mom, that's why it is so important for Christians to continually read the Bible and fellowship together. We never need to stand alone against the world when we use these two precious gifts from Christ Jesus.
So chin up! If Job could make it with only his faith in God, you can make it through any of your troubles with the help of the Bible, the Christian Church and your continual relationship with Jesus.
Peter just called me! Paul is ready to start our project and they want me to meet them at Peter's mansion right away.
Love Always
