Decontaminating Now!
"For the moment squeeze every precious drop of enjoyment out of Now!"
This is how I finished off the last article, so now I am going to give some pointers on how to do that. The thing is our now's get contaminated by our past and our future, which if you read the last article you will know that we don't really have a past or a future.
So how do we make our Now's better - firstly by not getting stuck in the past. The two biggest ways we get stuck in the past is un-forgiveness and regrets.
I have just listened to one of my favourite songs by Edith Piaf again; "Non, je ne regrette rien" - No, No Regrets! That's just how we must be, we must have no regrets - there is absolutely no point in it. Regrets just water-down our enjoyment of Now.
Un-forgiveness is worse! It does more than water our Now's down. Unforgiveness contaminates our Now's like stagnant water! Get rid of all unforgiveness now. Do not dwell in the past in anyway.
Let's take a look at what else robs us of making the best of Now. Not surprisingly, it's living in the future. Many of us spend far too much time dwelling on future issues and much of that time is negative.
The two obvious things that come to mind are fear and worry. I suppose it may be argued that worry is a milder form of fear, but whatever the case may be we need to stop both. I am not going to spend a lot of time on them here, I have discussed them at length in my book and in other articles on this blog, suffice to say if you are fearing or worrying about anything then you are not doing Now well!
I was coaching someone the other day and made a list of things that one does that constitutes making good use of now. Being at peace, which I mentioned yesterday was one of them, some of the others were: Being patient, being grateful, being kind, being happy, giving, and of course loving others were all on the list.
I have got to a place where I measure my "performance"; I was having a disagreement with my wife recently, all the while I was monitoring how I was doing Now. Was I reacting calmly and maturely? Was I being kind and considerate? If you want to know how I did, I did okay, but I could have done better and will next time.
It's to my and everyone else's advantage that I do my now's better and better - it's the same for you too!
So are you doing Now well?
To answer that question at any given time, you have to be truthful with yourself, not only that, you have to (in a sense) take a step back from yourself - give yourself a critical once over. Constantly ask the question, at least for a while; "Are you doing now well?" Be honest with yourself. Are you mumbling under your breath? Do you find your thoughts going around in circles, rehashing the same old stuff? We often let this happen when 'he, she or they'; "do it again!" We allow ourselves to regurgitate old grievances - resist the temptation! It's not him, her or them that I am concerned about, it's you.

If this sounds like bondage, in truth it's the complete opposite it is the most freeing truth I have yet come to understand. (Okay one of the most freeing truths). It really does bring a lot of peace into your heart and frees you up to make the best of now and enjoy life to the full.
