Decorating Dilemma: When A Mirror Is A Permanent Fixture

Most of the time a mirror is an effective and desirable decorating tool that adds light and spaciousness to a room

. But sometimes you get stuck with a mirror that's permanently affixed to the wall. In these cases what you're longing for is a little less mirror and a lot more style. Fortunately, there are some decorative sleight-of-hand tricks that you can employ to give you what you want.

Big Mirrors that Stick it to You

Big mirrors that are securely attached to the wall present the biggest challenge. Typically you'll find these large wall mirrors in a bathroom over the vanity and they are glued to the wall and also have supporting clips attached to the front. The simplest solution is to go with the flow and appreciate the mirror for what it has to offer: A large vanity mirror let's two people primp over the vanity without getting in each other's way and it gives you a well-lit, real life look at your appearance.

However, it may just be more mirror than you care to live with every morning and you may prefer to free up some wall space for other purposes. One solution is to attach a sheet of wood over part of the mirror mounting it on the wall above, below and to one side of the mirror. Frame out the remaining mirror with wood molding, including the edge where the mirror and sheet of wood now meet.

Shelves can be mounted on the sheet of wood and the final effect is a less intrusive framed mirror with a set of shelves on one side. If you'd rather do away with the mirror completely, another option is to totally cover the mirror with wood backing and shelving. Either way, you've gained shelf space and reduced or did away with the offending mirror. The wood shelving and backing can be painted or stained as desired or you can install wall paper on the flat wood surface behind the shelves for decorator flair.

Oversized Mirrors in a Living Room or Bedroom

You might have a large wall mirror in a living room or bedroom that has become tiresome and you'd like to change up your decor. The mirror may have an interesting frame and if the mirror can be taken down from the wall, do so and measure the dimensions of the frame. Purchase artwork or a print of the same size and fit it in the frame in front of the mirror just as you would insert a picture inside a photo frame: Remove the frame, inserting the artwork and reattach the frame. Or you can use an interesting fabric instead of artwork if you prefer. If at some time you decide you'd rather have the mirror back, it's simply a matter of removing the artwork or fabric.

If your mirror is attached to the wall and cannot be taken down, purchase a print or artwork of the correct size and attach it to the front of the mirror with double-sided adhesive tape; carefully affix the artwork to the front of the mirror so that it appears to be within the decorative frame.
