First off, you want to create a concept of what your dream home will look like

the color palette, furniture style, and feel? Write this down and refer back to this concept while looking for great furniture deals. This will ensure that you don't end up with a house full of furniture bargains that don't work together.

Armed with your design ideas, you are ready to look in unlikely places for furniture steals. Head to your local charity shop, thrift store, or consignment store to look for that diamond in the rough. Bring your imagination! Most of the furniture pieces will not be in take-home condition and will need some attention and a little elbow grease to fulfill their true potential.

Consider the size, shape, and structure of the piece. Does the chair wobble if you sit in it? If so, walk away. You want to find sturdy pieces that are a little rough around the edges. Typically, wood furniture is easier to transform than upholstered pieces, although if your local upholsterer is a great resource and will be able to help if you find something that needs to be re-covered or re-upholstered.

Shop online sales. Bookmark all of your favorite online furniture stores and visit them regularly for new sale items. If you see something you want remember to act fast -- online retailers sell out quickly!

Swap meets and flea markets are your friend. Flea markets continue to be one of my favorite resources for finding original and affordable furniture, home accessories, lighting, and knick-knacks. Everything is up for negotiation (which is good for you!) and there is no tax charged on purchases (which is also great for the pocketbook!). Bring a tape measure and a camera phone to help you make decisions on the spot. Arriving with a list of things you are looking for is a good way to stay on track.
