Dedicated Server Hosting Vs. Cloud Hosting

Cloud computing markets itself as a service where you simply pay as you go, but right now let's look at it as if we were using it for an entire month. The cloud hosting prices we'll be looking at are from Amazon, and the dedicated server information is obtained from SingleHop.

For Amazon, let's look at the standard service with Large Instance to make the comparison.

For the Large Instance, you will be getting 7.5Gb storage, 4 EC2 Units, 850Gb storage for local instance, and a 64-bit OS platform. For Linux this costs 34 cents an hour and for Windows it is 48 cents. That means that for Linux you will be paying $245 per month and for Windows it will be $346.

A dedicated server from SingleHop that would give similar (though not equal) specs would use an Intel Core2Duo E8400.

With this setup you get a 6mb cache, 250Gb hard drive from SATA, 4Gb RAM, and 10Tb of bandwidth every month. This service costs $179 a month.

Now obviously, it's impossible to make an exact comparison because the RAM throws things off. With Amazon you get 7.5Gb and with SingleHop it's only 4Gb.

With the SingleHop service you will be saving $66 per month on a Linux OS and a whopping $167 per month with a Windows setup. Just looking at this comparison shows that cloud hosting isn't quite worth it, although a lot depends on what you will be needing the service for, and for how long.
