Name: Deepika Padukone
Born: 5th January, 1986
Occupation: Actor, Model
Years Active: 2006- Present
Early Life
Deepika was born to Prakash Padukone and Ujalla (Manglorean origin) on the
5th of January, 1986 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her dad was the Indian national
badminton champion and her mother was a travel agent. They were based
in Denmark for a while as her dad had to play a few set of crucial badminton
matches. When she was eleven months old, they moved to Bangalore and
settled there.
She studied at Sophia High School (I.C.S.E.), an all-girls' convent in Bangalore. As a student, she was above average; she never had put much effort into her studies. At that time, like her father, she too wanted to be a sportsperson and hence was involved in a lot of extra-curricular activities like dance, music and sports.
It was in the fifth grade that modeling assignments started coming to her.
Westside (Little Woods, then), BPL, Lipton, Weekenders were a few of the
campaigns she did. Her parents didn't have any issues about it. As a child model
she was pampered a lot on the sets. And when the campaigns were out, she had
already become a little star in her school and that's when the seed of modeling
sprouted in her.
She completed her high school education from Mount Carmel College,
Bangalore. While in college, she was spotted in a ramp competition in NLS,
Bangalore. That brought her to Mumbai to pursue a career in modeling.
Initially, she followed her father's footsteps and started playing badminton. She played at the state level till the 10th grade and even got a stint at the national level. But after sometime she had realized that her real goal was modeling. Deepika then started appearing in several print and television commercials of Liril, Dabur Lal, Limca and Close-up. She was chosen the brand ambassador for the jewelry exhibition 'Jewels of India', and was chosen as the face for the international cosmetics major, Maybelline.
By this time, Deepika had become very successful in modeling. She was chosen
the Kingfisher's 'Model of the Year' in the year 2004 and 2005 and later made
it to the prominent Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar in 2006 and was awarded
the 'Model of the Year' at many prestigious award functions including Elle's and
Zee Fashion Awards.
Career
She had never really thought of becoming an actor at any point in her life, but
she was bombarded with film offers during her second year in modeling; at the
tender age of 18, but didn't plunge into it until she got serious about films.
She made an appearance in Himesh Reshamiyya's music video 'Naam Hai Tera'
from his album 'Aap Ka Suroor' in the year 2006. She could have waited no
longer to enter the film industry. So she made her debut, in the year 2006, with
the Kannada film 'AISHWARYA', directed by Indrajit Lankesh, opposite Upendra
(one of the leading stars in the Kannada film industry).
In the year 2007, Deepkia made her much awaited Bollywood debut with the
Farah Khan directorial 'OM SHANTI OM', opposite one of the biggest superstars
in Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan. The film turned out to be the biggest grosser of
the year and Deepika was remarkable in her role although she was sharing the
screen with Shahrukh. She, for portraying Shahti Priya, walked away with the
Filmfare Best Female Debut award and was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress award.
In 2008 came Siddhart Annad's romantic comedy, 'BACHNA AE HASEENO',
opposite Ranbir Kapoor, along with Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba. The
film fared reasonably well. Next was Nikhil Advani's cross-cultural action
comedy 'CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA' in the year 2009, opposite Akshay
Kumar, where Deepika portrayed a dual role of twin sisters who get separated
during childhood. The film was a commercial and critical disaster. Her second
film of the year was Imtiaz Ali's romantic drama 'LOVE AAJ KAL', opposite Saif
Ali Khan. The film became one of the highest grossing movies of the year, but
her role was met with a mixed response.
In 2010, Deepika's first release was Excel Entertainment's 'KARTHIK CALLING
KARTHIK', a psychological thriller opposite Farhan Akhtar. The film was received
with moderate reviews by the critics and did a moderate business. Next came
Sajid Khan's comedy 'HOUSEFULL' alongside Akshay Kumar, the film though
panned by critics, was a huge commercial hit.
Upcoming Films
Her next film coming up is 'LAFANGEY PARINDEY', opposite Neil Nitin Mukesh,
directed by Pradeep Sarkar and is produced by Yash Raj Films. Following
would be Kunal Kohli's romantic film, 'BREAK KE BAAD', opposite Imran
Khan. And 'KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY', a period film directed by Ashutosh
Gowariker, opposite Abhishek Bachchan.
Personal Life
Deepkia has a younger sister named Anisha, born in 1991, who is a total
extrovert and has taken to sports on a much more professional level particularly
golf.
Even though, Deepika had taken to modeling very early in her teenage years and
couldn't pursue higher studies; she got done with her graduation in social science through correspondence.
Deepika had dated actor Ranbir Kapoor from March, 2008, but broke up in
November, 2009. She even had tattooed Ranbir's initials 'RK' on the nape of her
neck.
