Causes of Halitosis:

There are many different factors that can contribute to halitosis. An extremely normal case of halitosis is better known as "morning breath," which occurs due to changes that occur in the mouth while sleeping. Since the body produces less saliva when sleeping, the mouth can get dry and create dead cells, which bacteria feed off and produce unpleasant odors.

Dental hygiene plays a major role in your mouth's odor, and failing to brush and floss on a regular basis allows bits of food to stick to the teeth and decay, causing bad breath. Proper brushing and flossing on a regular basis can help keep foods from sticking to your teeth and reduce bacteria buildup, preventing tooth decay, gum disease and halitosis. Watching what you eat can also help control your mouth's odor. Foods such as garlic, onions and certain spices are actually absorbed into the bloodstream and carried into the lungs, affecting your breath's odor until the food is completely out of your system. Simply avoiding these foods can help. Drinking plenty of water will keep your mouth moist and fresh, and chewing gum can promote saliva production and help wash away food particles. Temporary fixes include mouthwash, gum and mint candy.
