Delicious Art Of Creating Quilt Embroidery Designs

Sightseeing in the car is much different than doing so on the back of a cool motor-scooter

, a la Roman Holiday! My husband and I made a little trip the awesome little beach town of Platanias today. The last time we went, he rode his Vespa while I perched on the back, pretty pink helmet and sunglasses in place to see the beautiful scenery. Today, we went by car, with me in the drivers seat. What a difference! With the windows rolled down, we could enjoy the breeze, but its just not as easy to zip through traffic in the cage (scooter lingo) as it is on the scooter.

During the many years that I have been making quilts, Ive collected many tools that remind me of this. Tools that are supposed to make things easier but, instead, make more work for me. If I got rid of these tools today, my quilting supplies stash would look much emptier!

In the quilting classes that I teach, I always begin by going over the tools and supplies are needed. I start with the basics and discuss the need for each one. Then, I share optional items that make my quilting life easier, but are not necessary to make a quilt at all. Many new quilters make the mistake of thinking they need all the quilting supplies they can find, wasting their money in the process. Just think of all the yummy fabric that could be purchased instead!

If youre just getting started in the fun hobby of making quilts, you only need a few items. Fabric is a given. Good quality cotton is the best. Scissors, thread, pins. Hand needles. Not even a sewing machine is needed, but it sure helps! Those are the basics. Yes, really. The next step in filling the tool box would be a rotary cutter, mat, and a cutting ruler or two.

If youre getting into beautiful quilt embroidery, youll need just a bit more. An embroidery machine becomes a necessity, as do embroidery quilting designs. Wash-away stabilizer and embroidery or quilting thread round out the necessary items. It really doesnt seem like much, does it?

While the car may have kept us warmer during our trek today, when the weather is turning towards Autumn, it was just not as fun. The scenery is harder to see and the traffic much harder to navigate. But, the car still got us to where we wanted to go.

Unnecessary quilting tools make me feel the same way; happy that Im creating (traveling), but frustrated by the extra demands placed on me by the tool (traffic). Each time I use them, I wonder why. I know beforehand that they dont truly make anything easier for me, yet I still use them. I guess it is because I want to believe that they truly will make making quilts easier or less time consuming. Maybe Im just stubborn!

While I cant get rid of my need for a car, I can get rid of unnecessary quilting supplies. It would be even better if I didnt buy them in the first place. But, Im a quilter. A finished quilt is the destination, and it doesnt really matter how I get there. I wont remember anything but the beautiful fabric scenery along the way.
