Dell is the brainchild of Michael Dell who was inspired by the thought of providing customized personal computers to his customers. The roots of the company can be traced back to the year 1984 with the creation of PCs limited by Michael Dell. Dell is now among the largest technological corporations globally and its headquarters are based in the state of Texas in the United States of America.

Hewlett Packard came into being with the association of Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. The story goes that there was a coin toss between the founders as to whose name would be the first to come in the name. Even though Packard won the toss, the company was still named Hewlett-Packard. HP, as it is commonly known, was established in the year 1939 in the garage of the Packard family. The company was formally incorporated in the year 1947 and went public ten years later, i.e. in the year 1957.

The clear winner here is HP. Their computers are generally sleek and come in eye catching colors. Dell on the other hand provides computers that are slightly bulky.

Pre-sales and after-sales customer support is a key factor in the minds of customers while buying a computer. Dell support is available in all the countries of its operation and is indeed quite comprehensive. Any software problem that you might face with your computer is solved online by the experts available at Dell support. Hardware issues are solved by shipping the faulty part back to Dell and then the replacement part is shipped back to you. The support is available twenty four hours a day, 365 days an year. The same holds true for HP support as well. HP support, however has won more awards than Dell support in the customer satisfaction category.

Although awards might not be a clear indicator of the quality, it can be arguably aid that HP support, more precisely HP technical support has an edge over Dell technical support.

The Verdict

HP is a clear winner when it comes to comparing the above three crucial factors. However, it does come down to customer loyalty and word of mouth publicity. Most former Dell customers would stick to Dell while HP customers would do the same. However, in case you are a first time customer, you would better advised to go and buy a HP computer.
