Dental Implants - Tips For A Successful Recovery
You will be hard pressed to find an oral health procedure that provides the stunning results that dental implants do
. Providing patients with a structurally advanced alternative to dentures, this procedure is the closest thing medical science has given us to a new set of natural teeth. Obviously, the teeth used in this procedure are no more "natural" than dentures, but the methods used in the surgery are far more advanced than those found in traditional tooth replacement. By implanting directly into the gum and jaw, dentists can give their patients the stability and strength missing from dentures. That said, it is surgery and there will be a recovery period. Here are some tips on making it a successful one.
Eating
You've just had dental implants put in. You're overjoyed with how they look but, naturally, you want to know when you can get back to a regular diet. No one wants to sit around eating applesauce for two weeks, even if it is necessary. This is a good time for patience, however. The time for regular foods will come soon enough, but you can harm your recovery if you jump right back into corn on the cob straight out of the dentist's office. For the first week, stick with softer foods. This will allow the surgical area to heal and will let you keep food particles from irritating the area. Many dentists recommend using a salt-water mouthwash after eating for extra sterilization.
Bleeding
There will be some degree of bleeding immediately following the surgery. After all, the gum line is notorious for bleeding even under basic circumstances. Dental implants are fairly invasive, all told, and there is going to be some blood. Generally speaking, this bleeding should subside within an hour. For that period, use the bandaging and/or gauze given to you by the dentist. If you continue to have problems with bleeding after the one-hour mark, give your dentist a call and consult with him about further steps to take.
Hastening Recovery
After the site has begun the healing process, a blood clot will form in the area affected by the dental implants. This is perfectly normal and is a sign that your mouth is healing the way it should be. Take the first 24 hours after your surgery as a time of healing and recovery. Take it easy, stay out of the gym, and avoid any strenuous activity. This may not be on par with open-heart surgery, but it is still surgery. Avoid smoking or drinking with a straw, as these activities can disrupt the clot and set your recovery back.
