Dental Lasers And Health

The use of dental lasers minimizes the probability of damage to the surrounding healthy dental tissue during a procedure

. When a regular dental drill is used, there is a lot of vibration that makes the equipment difficult to control. However there is no such vibration with a laser and the dentist can do his job much more accurately since the beams of light emitted are very precise. Traditional dentist drills also create friction, which can cause extra bit of tooth to wear away or can even cause cracking, but this does not happen with lasers. With technology such as the Er:YAG laser reacts with water at the surface of the tooth, causing the decayed tissue to vaporize.

Because of its sterilizing and sealing properties, a dental laser is much more effective than traditional methods. For example, laser treatment of a root canal can eliminate 99.7% of bacteria in the affected area. With tooth cleaning, lasers can result with noticeably whiter teeth, and some patients even see continuous improvement for days after the procedure is done. When it comes to fighting gum disease, Laser Periodontal Therapy, treatment provides better, longer-lasting results. Studies have shown that 98% of laser-treated patients do not have further disease progression after five years, compared to only 5% of traditional gum surgery patients.

Laser dentistry provides more effective treatment all around. It can remove decay and kill bacteria leaving behind healthy teeth that will stay healthier for longer. This will prevent the need for restoration or dental implants in many cases because the problem can be fixed before it gets out of control. But even in cases where restoration is needed, lasers can remove the smear layer covering the tooth, resulting in a stronger bond between the tooth and restorative material so that the implant stays on there longer and more securely.

The minimally invasive approach of lasers means that unwanted tooth or gum material is taken care of, while the healthy portion is able to improve more significantly. This means that patients of dentists who use advanced laser technology will have much healthier teeth than those treated with traditional equipment and methods.

There are many ways that dental lasers lead to better health. They keep the healthy parts of the tooth healthier, they don't inadvertently destroy healthy part of the teeth, they kills more germs, they are more effective during procedures, and the effects last longer as well.
