One such dental problem that is observed among many people is Bruxism.
Bruxism is also known as tooth grinding which is nothing but clenching together of the bottom and upper jaw accompanied by the grinding of the lower set of teeth with the upper set. Study conducted by specializeds reveals that Bruxism affects between 10-50% of the population. Bruxism is a subconscious behaviour which happens without the knowledge of the patients especially during sleep.
Most of the time it is found that Bruxism occurs during sleep, however, some cases are reported to be occurred during waking hours also. During sleep, the biting force (the force at which the jaws clench together) can be up to six times greater than the pressure during waking hours, consequently, causing more tooth damage. It is a major concern for dental care.
The Results of Bruxism
Apart from leading to pain and cause damage to gums and other oral structures, Bruxism can also hamper your oral health in the following manner:
1.Sore Facial Muscles, Headaches, and Ear-Aches: The muscles used to chew food are the same ones responsible for bruxism. Due to clenching these muscles often become sore or tender in the morning and may result in making the jaw feel tight or may cause pain when the sides of the mouth are touched. Often this muscle pain may further percolate to a headache, ear-ache, or neck pain.
2.Cosmetic Damage: Bruxism can cause the teeth to be ground down becoming significantly shortened and creating cosmetic damage.
3.Sensitive Teeth: Due to continuous erosion of the enamel of the tooth because of bruxism the underlying dentin layer of the tooth is exposed causing the tooth to become sensitive to cold, pressure, and other stimuli.
4.Fractured Teeth and Fillings: The high pressure created from bruxism can fracture teeth and crack fillings.
5.Temporomandibular Joint Damage: Bruxism can cause damage to the temperomandibular joint which impacts your
dental care. This is the "hinge" which connects the lower jaw to the upper jaw allowing use to chew and talk.
How to Treat Bruxism
The best possible way out to tackle is to visit your dentist immediately. They are the right persons to advise you in case your symptoms are of bruxisms. As a part of dental care, they can create a customized mouth guard for you to wear to protect you from grinding while you are asleep. The mouth guard absorbs all the wear and tear that your teeth would normally endure otherwise, during your bruxism and will mitigate the damage associated with bruxism.
Additionally, your dentist may help you properly position your teeth and tongue so as to reduce your bruxism. Reducing alcohol intake is also advisable since alcohol has been shown to worsen bruxism.
