Denture Cream And Poligrip Settlements
A growing number of lawsuits brought by concerned consumers against Glaxosmithkline
in the past year culminated in a number of class action lawsuits being filed in regards to their Super Poligrip product and Fixodent. It is alleged that both products could have exposed consumers to more than 6 times more than the daily allowance of zinc resulting in zinc poisoning.
The problem came to light as doctors began to notice a trend among denture wearers coming in to complain of a number of similar problems including gastrointestinal distress, neurological problems, numbness, loss of sensation, loss of balance and even paralysis in some patients. After testing, it was discovered that many of the patients had elevated zinc levels indicating zinc poisoning.
Usually, the recommended daily dosage of zinc is between 12 and 15mg and most individuals are able to satisfy this requirement through diet. Some may choose to take supplements to increase their zinc intake, but as long as it is taken according to the instructions, it is highly unlikely that a consumer would overdose on zinc. In the
Poligrip Settlements, it is alleged that consumers were likely exposed to over 300 mg of zinc daily; an increase of almost 6 times the daily recommended dose. The problem was often exacerbated by consumers who used more than the recommended amount of the product to adhere poorly fitting dentures.
It is estimated that over 35 million Americans use dentures, so it is expected that the impact of the alleged zinc poisoning due to Poligrip and Fixodent could be far-reaching in scope. Long-term side effects can increase given a patients age, size, overall health and length of exposure. Considering that most of the consumers are older individuals, it is possible that many of the suits may involve people who are experiencing some of the more severe side effects.
It is reported that Glaxo has agreed in principle to settle, but cases continue to be evaluated and scheduled for trial so it remains to be seen what the outcome might be. To avoid further damage, they have removed products using zinc in their formulation and have begun to replace them with products that are zinc-free. Warnings about the risk of zinc poisoning has also been added to their labeling and on their websites for Super Poligrip.
