Depression and Breakups – Are you Sad or is it Depression?
Depression and Breakups Are you Sad or is it Depression
?
Feeling sad and a little bit depressed after a breakup is perfectly natural. There comes a time though when it crosses the line between feeling sad and a medical condition known as depression that can have a significant impact on your mental health, quality of life, and the people around who know and love you as well. Sadness and depression are not the same thing. It's very important that if you are concerned you may be crossing the line between the two that you seek help.
Sadness is something you can snap out of over time. Sadness after a breakup allows you to recover a little bit every day one day at a time. It's something that you can snap out of for brief periods of time (even longer sometimes) as you are distracted by other people and activities in your life. Sadness fades with time and distances from the intense emotions of a broken heart.
Depression does not. Depression lingers. Depression hangs over you like a cloud that creeps into all areas of your life. It turns the bright colors in the world around you to grey and prevents you from really experiencing the full beauty of life. Depression robs you of your vitality and can even have physical symptoms that cause you to withdraw further away from the world and deeper into yourself. Depression isn't something you "get over." If left untreated, depression can, all too often, have lethal consequences.
Depression isn't the natural course of events following a breakup. No matter how natural it seems to be down and sad (those things are normal for a while) it isn't natural to be depressed after a breakup. If you are going through deeper symptoms of depression following the end of a relationship, it's a good idea to do a little more than try to fix your relationship or get your ex back.
You need to seek the help of a qualified medical professional. You may not need medication but there are things that can be done to treat depression and help you improve your overall quality of life from here on out.
When do you know that you need to do something more than work to cheer yourself up or try to make yourself happy?
