Design A Winter Garden

For most people when you think about a garden we imagine the beautiful colors and blossoming flowers during the spring and summer months

. Knowing how or what to design a winter garden with can leave many of us baffled as we simply can't imagine a garden looking interesting, healthy or beautiful in the cold weather. But our imagination can begin to work if we think of a winter garden as sleeping and not being dead!

Its quite simple to imagine a garden that has plants substantial enough so that when snow falls they still hold the weight of any snow and protrude above the sow line. You can still see shape and even color despite being in the depths of a snowy winter. With a little planning you can select the right plants to achieve this look.

Most of the interest in a winter garden will come from the architectural layout of the space. This doesn't mean that youre going to have to build wooden archways or gazebos in your backyard, but you will have to think of the structure and shape of your beds, lawn and plants. When it comes to plants think how they will look during the cold weather, will they lose their leaves, what shape will the branches be?

Choosing interesting plants that have beautiful looking branches can provide interesting features any time of the year.

During the cold months you will also be able to create a lot of fantastic neutral colors from the seed heads of plants and also any berries that begin to appear. Imagine the peaceful and relaxing winter scene with plenty of brown, auburn green and red colors; this can be achieved with the right planning.

Obviously you can attempt to design this look by yourself but you will need a lot of knowledge and you will need to know how to combine all the various elements. This is easier said than done so hiring a garden design professional is probably a smart move for you and your property. After all it's so easy to waste a vast amount of money on trees, shrubs and plants that simply don't work well together, don't look great in cold weather or even don't last through the entire winter.

Making an initial investment with a garden designer will be exactly that, an investment. Your garden will look great all year round and it will be a fantastic space to spend time in, even on a fresh winter morning!
