Determining Your Loft and Lie In Golf
Hereunder are given few was to determine your loft and lie in golf:
Loft
Loft is basically the degree a club face is angled in relation to the sole. Most of the players, amateur or professional they may, are of no concern about lofts. The more loft, the higher its trajectory.
Lofts vary from club to club in line by 4 normally, but this is not always necessary. There are some club manufacturers, whose loft may vary by plus or minus 2. However, you can customize loft in your club according to your needs and requirements. For hitting a ball high, you may need less loft and vice versa.
You can hit a mile by having a 7-iron in your bag and you may find a 6-iron incapable of moving a ball. This can be due to the fact that you might have lofts for 6.5-iron and 5.5-iron respectively.
It is a good idea to seek help from a professional, who usually have a loft and tie machine, which is helpful to check the loft and lie of the club more appropriately.
Lie
Lie of a golf club is of same importance as loft. They both are vital in golf. You often heard a term lie angle associated with golf club. It is the angle between the sole of the golf club and the shaft.
If the angle between the shaft and clubhead is more acute with upright lie, it will lift the toe of the club off the ground. On the other hand, if the angle between clubhead and shaft is wider with flat lie, it will lift the heel of the ground. With more upright lie, you can have straighter hit and flatter lie can improve the speed of clubhead.
It is also noticed that if you have your lie too upright for your stance, you will have to hook or if you have it too flat, you will need to slice the ball. At many occasions where lie doesn't suit the golfer's need, he or she will try to change his or her stance to suit the lie of the club. This is not the right way to do. Instead of changing one's stance to suit the lie of the club, one has to change the lie of the club to suit the stance.
While purchasing new clubs always keep few questions in mind: Do I have to shift the club to the left or right to get it properly soled? Do I have to move away? Or do I have to move closer to the ball than usual? Make sure the answer of all these questions would be no, otherwise your selected club may not have a proper lie for you.
The long irons and woods often have a slight gap between the toe of the clubhead and the ground that allow the shafts to bring the toes down with longer, faster swings.
