Developing A Following And What To Do
If you're working with someone who doesn't have a following online
, it is important to think about how you will go about developing a following. You want to be successful at it. The first thing is to look at your product or service.
As social media takes off, there are more and more doors that are opening up for other people. You want to start off by building a powerful persona. You have to be someone that people want to hear and listen to. I'm fortunate for I write tons of articles that speak to people all over the world. I do have a fair amount of people that follow the work that I do.
When I first started writing articles, I had no clients or people that were looking for me. There are two things to remember when you get into this business, you have two camps. There's my camp which is the right one and the other camp. The other camp says that the numbers of following matters because social media is nothing but a numbers game.
You have the out of date television sales mentality of listeners where they say, we have a million viewers. Well a million viewers don't really mean anything. You have tons of celebrities that have millions of views and they might use social media, but it really doesn't mean anything if they isn't any interaction.
It's not the number of followers that you have that is important; it is the number of people that interact with you that's important. So they retweet you, they actually have an ongoing conversation with you; they are recommending to others what you recommend. Those people see you as putting out valuable information.
When I work with a new client, we'll start by building a persona for them. We ask a few questions. What makes you compelling and interesting? What can we do? How do we need to show up to be consistent? People want to see a personal brand to connect with.
When you use social media it can be a one on one deal. You're putting a personal brand on something that has a voice. It doesn't matter if it is a large company, you have to stay consistent and you have to plan it all out. It is so very important that you do that.
Start off by putting something out that people want to hear and to listen to. It doesn't matter who your audience is. You don't have to be flashy, just consistent.
You have to be what your customers expect you to be. If they are looking for something, then give it to them. When you go about developing a following it is all about information and giving it to them on a consistent basis.
