Developing a Head Lice Remedy and Strategy That Works
If you have recently found head lice in your home
, you'll quickly need to decide on an appropriate remedy and strategy to combat the unwanted infestation. Although you may immediately think of popping down to the pharmacy, you may be surprised to find out what these products contain; and it could make you think twice about applying the standard over the counter chemical remedy ever again.
Many of the remedies available at a pharmacy will contain either pesticides or silicon. Pesticides attempt to poison the lice, and silicon attempts to smoother the lice.
As well as choosing an appropriate remedy that you feel is suitable for use, you must also take the time to develop an effective strategy and plan for removing the insects and the eggs or nits once and for all. Your strategy should include a plan for removing the insects not just from the affected individuals but also from home furnishings, as well as plans for preventative methods to stop any infestation from making a hasty return to your home.
Choosing the Right Head Lice Remedy
Each parent will feel differently about remedies, and it's entirely up to you which of the many remedies you choose that you feel is right to use. One thing that parents do agree on as a useful tool against even the most rampant infestations is the simple nit comb.
The nit comb can be used alongside all other possible remedies; however, you should not rely on the plastic complimentary combs that come with pharmaceutical and over the counter treatments. The teeth in the plastic combs tend to bend, rendering them ineffective after only a couple of uses. It is better to invest in a metal toothed nit comb, as these will be far more effective, and much more durable.
There are also electronic nit combs available on the market. However, remember that these cannot be used in the wet combing method. It is also more expensive than the manual combs. Because of this many parents stick to manual combs.
Create a Strategy to Suit Your Head Lice Remedy
Once you have chosen your remedy, it's important to devise a strategy. Here is a common strategy that you can base yours upon:
1) Apply the chosen remedy on the affected individuals (called the hosts). Follow instructions from an online article for home remedies, or follow the instructions provided with the chemical treatments.
2) Once you wash the treatment out, immediately grab the nit comb. Make sure you read and research online articles for the right technique when using your comb.
3) Clean your home using methods that will remove any surviving insects from bedding, towels, linen and toys. Remember to vacuum your car head rests, as well as your mattress.
4) Use the wet combing method every day following the initial treatment, and remove any insects on the scalp. You should only really find nymphs (baby insects) but if you keep finding lots of adult insects during this period the chances are your child is picking up fresh adult insects from elsewhere.
5) After 7 10 days of the initial treatment, it's time to go through the process again. Treat the family, and retreat the home to another spring clean.
6) Use the wet combing method for a further three days. Providing your chosen remedy has been effective, you should find no surviving insects, nymphs, or nits left on the hosts' head.
Hopefully this helps you formulate an appropriate strategy for use with your own situation. Some of the tips here may not be applicable to your situation but you can still use them as a guide to pattern your own solution. Remember that the home is to be treated as well as the hosts!
