The Drinking of tea was thought to have started around the fourth century when the "camellia sinensis" tea-plant were first grown. Tea drinking appears to have started around the same time in China, India, and Japan, tea was primary used for its healing qualities. Around the seventh century tea came in bricks. Chunks of the brick were cut off and crushed so it could be heated in water . The tea was cooked in large pots or cauldrons and was sipped from bowls. When powered tea came into use it was combined with hot water in large, wide bowls and was whipped with a whisk to create a forth. When the powdered tea had settled to the bottom it was sipped from the bowl. When tea leaf infusion came into use during the early 1300s of China's Ming Dynasty, the need a for teapots to steep the leaf tea began. The first teapot like vessels were actually for wine and water. These vessels were later adopted for steeping the tea leaves.

Clay teapots were produced in the YiXing region of China. These clay pots are some of the earliest known, and thought to be some of the best containers for tea. They were of high quality, texture, and beauty, because of the purple clay that they were made from. They were also treasured for the ability to absorb the flavor of the tea. In the beginning teapots were made for individual use, only holding enough for one person. The tea was drank from the spout. These early teapots would inspire new designs when other countries began to accept their use.

Introduction Of Porcelain Teapots

Some believe that early clay wine pots were shipped to Europe packed with tea to prevent damage and this led to the use of the pots for brewing tea. In Europe the discovery of porcelain paved the way for new teapot designs. Porcelain manufacturing was established in many parts of Europe to make teapots. Teapots remained an expensive item for high society and was limited in use for quite some time.

Silver teapots became popular in the 1700s, used mostly by the English and Scandinavians. The first Silver teapot was believed to have been design around 1730.
