M.V. Hospital for diabetes - Part of the study team - offer free diabetes screening for TB patients
Nearly 50% of tuberculosis (TB) patients were found to have diabetes or pre-diabete, a recent study on more than 800 TB patients in Tamilnadu revealed. The study findings were released by Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Managing director, M.V. Hospital for diabetes, and Prof. M.Viswanathan Diabetes research center (WHO Colloborating center for research, Education and training in Diabetes). Free diabetes screenining for TB patients in all M.V.Hospital centers - at Mylapore, Perungudi and Royapuram - was also launched.
A two hour Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) revealed that 25.3 % of TB paients had diabetes and another 24.5 % had pre-diabetes. Out of the 25.3 % diabetics, more than 9 % were newly detected and the rest were already diagnosed with TB. The study was conducted among 827 TB patients registered under the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme in five select TB units in TN - Jaibeem Nagar and Medavakkam (Urban). Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, MD, M.V HHospital for diabetes, the study revealed that the prevalence of diabetes among TB patients was almost double than that og general population (10.4 %). Diabetic patients have weeker immunity and more prone to infectious diseases than other people with diabetes are three times at risk of acquring the infectious disease. In the three centers of M.V. Hospital. fasting and postprandial glucose test will be done free for patients having both diabetes and TB.

Vellore Institute of Technology(VIT) University and MV Hospital for Diabetes Private Limited Signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for under taking research and training in treatment of diabetes. VIT university chancellor G.Viswanathan and M.V Hospital managing director Vijay Viswanathan signed the MOU. The two institution s will work together for promotion of biotechnological research in treatment of diabetes. They will also share thier expertise. knowledge and resourses in the respective fields. The VIT University will also enroll research scholars working at MV Hospital for Ph.D, accrding to the MOU.
